Nawaz’s demand to broadcast accountability court proceedings is a political gimmick

News Analysis |

Disgruntled former three-time Prime Minister (PM) and Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N’s) ‘Quaid for life’ Nawaz Sharif has demanded that the hearing of the corruption cases against him in accountability court should be broadcast live, to unearth his innocence publically. Ousted PM addressed a gathering in Samundri, Faisalabad District, apparently used another political gimmick by demanding to show the court proceedings live on TV [so that public can know that he has nothing to hide].

He expressed a desire to expose the slander and lies which are surfaced routinely in the accountability court. “Those who don’t know me should know this that I will not scale back and will fight this oppression and injustice,” he added. Former PM termed the accountability court cases against him a fraud and urged his supporters to come and see the court proceedings.

The strategy is that in case of conviction, his followers should know that Nawaz was targeted on behest of certain elements and the cases against him were false and only intended to oust him from politics.

Later Maryam Nawaz also tweeted that “The case proceedings against Nawaz Sharif and me in NAB Court should be broadcast live, so that people can know the truth.” The father-daughter duo again spoke about the conspiracy hatched against them, exerting that fake cases are registered to target the house of sharif. Nawaz denies the cases against him and assured the public that he was punished for not drawing the salary from his son’s account.

Since, the start of this anti-judiciary campaign starting from GT road, the house of Sharif has condemned the judiciary in the harshest possible way. He denied the corruption allegations despite Supreme Court’s order to file NAB drawn references in the accountability court citing apparent embezzlement and corruption which lead to money laundering and acquisition of property abroad.

But, Nawaz adamantly says that there was not even a penny’s worth of corruption proved against him in the apex court. Nawaz perplexed strategy to be in the government and playing opposition politics at the same time is hard to digest. His ‘Campaign Agenda’ is simple, play a victim to perfection, abuse judiciary on its past mistakes, thwart the accountability process, degrade the institutions using the anti-judicial rhetoric & somehow save his wealth & damaged repute, post disqualification.

The game strategy is to gather mass support across Pakistan which is evident as the ousted PM continuous to pull huge crowds to his anti-judiciary campaigns across the country. He wants to ensure public through these gimmicks that he is innocent and the corruption charges is only a witch hunt against his family. Every now and then, during his campaign, he asks the public, will they stand by him, if he makes a call?

It is apparently a threat in a disguise that if you [judiciary] opted to convict him on corruption charges, he may bring the country to stand-still through strikes. Moreover, Nawaz is building a momentum through ‘media engineering’. A certain segment of the media is reporting in favor of Nawaz and reporting partially to misinform the public. Commenting on this unfortunate situation, Rauf Klasra said, “the way things are going, one day media will report that Wajid Zia has accepted inside the courtroom that “London flats are mine.”

The demand to broadcast the court proceedings is also political move to assure public of his innocence. He has been able to sell his rhetoric through friendly media outlets. The strategy is that in case of conviction, his followers should know that Nawaz was targeted on behest of certain elements and the cases against him were false and only intended to oust him from politics.
