New WhatsApp feature will let you go incognito

For users, this new functionality offers a layer of privacy similar to that found on platforms like Telegram.

WhatsApp, the popular instant messaging platform owned by Meta, is preparing to introduce a groundbreaking new feature aimed at enhancing user privacy: the ability to chat without revealing phone numbers. This feature, which is currently in the beta testing phase, will offer users a significant upgrade in how they manage their communication and privacy on the platform.

Username-Based Communication

The upcoming update, included in the WhatsApp Beta version 2.24.18.2 for Android, introduces a username-based system that allows users to create unique identifiers linked to their WhatsApp accounts. This means that users will be able to start conversations and interact with others using only their usernames, without needing to share their phone numbers.

For users, this new functionality offers a layer of privacy similar to that found on platforms like Telegram. When initiating a chat, only the username will be visible to the recipient, thereby masking the user’s phone number. However, users who have already saved each other’s phone numbers in their contacts will still be able to view them.

Anti-Spam Measures and PIN Protection

WhatsApp is also testing new anti-spam features in its latest beta version. One of these includes a PIN-based protection system, which requires a user to enter a four-digit PIN before initiating a chat with someone they have not previously interacted with, even if they know the other person’s username. This extra step aims to reduce unwanted messages and provide users with more control over who can contact them.

By integrating this PIN feature, WhatsApp is allowing users to manage their privacy settings better and potentially block spammers. This new layer of security aligns with Meta’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the privacy and safety of its users on all its platforms.

In addition to these privacy upgrades, WhatsApp is also developing a “Reshare Status Updates” feature. This will allow users to easily reshare status updates where they have been mentioned, a functionality similar to Instagram’s story resharing feature. By enabling quick and easy content sharing among contacts, WhatsApp aims to boost user engagement and make the platform more dynamic.
