Pakistan’s largest exploration company, Oil & Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL), has announced a major discovery of gas condensate reserves at the Baloch-2 well in Sindh’s Sanghar district. This significant find comes from the Sembar Formation, a geological structure known for its untapped hydrocarbon potential. The discovery was made by a joint venture that includes OGDCL with a 76% interest, Orient Petroleum with 19%, and Government Holdings (Private) Limited (GHPL) holding 5%. The joint effort aims to tap into new energy reserves to bolster Pakistan’s economy and energy sector.
The Baloch-2 well, spudded-in on February 24, 2024, was drilled to a total depth of 3,920 meters. According to OGDCL’s notice, wireline log interpretations and a drill stem test indicated the well could produce 6.8 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) of gas and 388 barrels of condensate per day at a wellhead flowing pressure of 2,180 pounds per square inch. This marks the first significant discovery in the Sinjhoro block, signaling a promising start to further exploration in the area.
Economic Opportunities and Future Exploration Plans
The discovery is expected to have a positive impact on the local and national economy by creating new job opportunities in Sanghar and its surrounding regions. An OGDCL spokesperson described the find as “positive news for Pakistan’s economy,” emphasizing the company’s commitment to further exploration in the region. The spokesperson noted that such discoveries could reduce Pakistan’s dependence on imported energy resources and contribute to its energy security.
Building on this success, OGDCL plans to continue its exploration and development activities. The company announced plans to re-enter existing shut-in wells and develop the full potential of the Sembar Formation, a region known for its hydrocarbon potential across the Middle and Lower Indus Basin. OGDCL is proactively seeking to expand its reach and capitalize on these new reserves, which could lead to increased regional development and cooperation among joint venture partners.
