OpenAI has announced that its ChatGPT-powered internet search feature will now be available to all logged-in users, significantly escalating its competition with Google’s dominance in the search market. Previously limited to paying subscribers since its October launch, this upgrade brings real-time web capabilities to the free tier, further enhancing ChatGPT’s usability.
Global Rollout with Real-Time Answers
The search feature enables ChatGPT to provide “fast, timely answers” accompanied by links to relevant web sources. OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer Kevin Weil stated, “We’re bringing search to all logged-in free users of ChatGPT. That means it’ll be available globally on every platform where you use ChatGPT.” Unlike traditional search engines, the interface avoids cluttered advertisements, resembling clean, user-friendly AI tools such as Perplexity.

The integration of real-time search addresses a longstanding limitation of ChatGPT, which previously relied on static datasets with time cutoffs. Adam Fry, ChatGPT Search product lead, highlighted the shift: “We’re really just making the ChatGPT experience that you know better with up-to-date information from the web.”
Enhanced Search Experience on Mobile
As part of its latest “12 Days of Ship-mas” announcements, OpenAI revealed that mobile users will benefit from an optimized version of the search feature. When searching for local businesses or attractions, users will now see results with images, ratings, and operating hours. These updates make the experience feel closer to a traditional search engine, while retaining the conversational approach that AI users appreciate. Maps and directions can even be accessed directly within the app, streamlining the process.
Competition with Google and Microsoft’s Role
This strategic move raises questions about OpenAI’s relationship with Microsoft, its largest investor. Microsoft has been actively incorporating AI into its Bing search engine to challenge Google’s dominance, while OpenAI now emerges as an independent threat with ChatGPT’s growing capabilities.
OpenAI’s aggressive expansion comes at a time of immense growth for the company. Under CEO Sam Altman, OpenAI recently reached a staggering $157 billion valuation with investors like Microsoft, SoftBank, and Nvidia. However, the surge in search adoption is expected to drive up computing demands and costs.

Paid subscribers will also gain an advantage with Advanced Voice Mode, which now integrates real-time search results. This feature allows ChatGPT to deliver up-to-date answers through spoken interactions, combining convenience with cutting-edge AI.
