Pakistan launches direct shipping line to Europe

Pakistan is set to redefine its maritime trade capabilities with the launch of the India North Europe Express (INX) maritime service.

Pakistan is set to redefine its maritime trade capabilities with the launch of the India North Europe Express (INX) maritime service. Commencing on February 5, 2025, this weekly service establishes a direct shipping line from Karachi to key European ports, including London Gateway, Rotterdam, Hamburg, and Antwerp. Utilizing 6,000 TEU container ships, the service completes a round trip in 11 weeks, significantly reducing transit times and ensuring timely delivery of goods.

Strengthening Global Supply Chains

The INX service is expected to bolster global supply chains by reducing reliance on transshipment hubs and improving logistics efficiency. Ports and shipping expert Asim Siddiqui noted that while other direct European services exist, this initiative enhances Pakistan’s seaborne trade capacity, especially to northern Europe. Sohail Shams, CEO of United Marine Agencies (UMA), emphasized the role of the service in strengthening the supply chain, enabling cost-effective and timely delivery of Pakistani goods to international markets.

A Boost for Pakistan’s Blue Economy

Pakistan’s blue economy is poised to benefit significantly from the INX service. With abundant marine, fisheries, mineral, and energy resources, the country has long sought to optimize its maritime potential. Vice Admiral Faisal Abbasi, Commander Karachi, highlighted the importance of Pakistan’s strategic location at the crossroads of Central Asia, Southwest Asia, and the Persian Gulf. This geographical advantage, coupled with initiatives like the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), positions Pakistan to expand its maritime capabilities manifold.

Strategic Impact on Trade and Economy

The new maritime route promises to enhance the competitiveness of Pakistani goods in European markets, particularly benefiting industries such as marine, fisheries, and minerals. Reduced transit times will address logistical bottlenecks, offering businesses faster access to European buyers. The direct route strengthens Pakistan’s connectivity to European trade hubs, making Karachi a critical player in regional and global trade.

Shams pointed out that the initiative is not merely a shipping service but a strategic move to foster economic growth. He explained that the improved connectivity will create opportunities for regional trade, boosting Pakistan’s export potential and maritime trade landscape.

Collaborative Effort for Progress

The INX service is a collaborative effort between South Korean shipping company HMM, Ocean Network Express (ONE), and UMA, HMM’s exclusive agent in Pakistan. Speaking at the launch ceremony, HMM’s Commercial Chief for Southwest Asia, Yang Jungmo, emphasized the service’s transformative potential for global trade, affirming the company’s commitment to providing efficient shipping solutions.
