Pakistan vs. New Zealand match to be played in empty stadium due to security concerns

Pakistan and New Zealand warm-up match in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, scheduled for September 29 in Hyderabad, will be played in an empty stadium due to security concerns.

Organizers made this decision in consultation with the Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI), which will facilitate ticket refunds for fans who had purchased tickets for the game through their ticketing partner.

A representative from the BCCI confirmed this decision, stating, “The game will be played without spectators, and those who have booked their tickets will receive refunds,” as reported by the Indian media outlet ‘Indian Express.’

The security concerns leading to this decision stem from significant events happening in Hyderabad around the same time. Events like Ganesh Visarjan and Mila-Un-Nabi, occurring on September 28, have raised apprehensions regarding security in the city. Hyderabad police had requested a postponement of the match. However, due to the already tight schedule, it was mutually agreed to proceed with the game behind closed doors at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

Similar security concerns have arisen for two World Cup 2023 pool games featuring Pakistan, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and the Netherlands, scheduled for October 9 and October 10 in Hyderabad. In response, there will be a noticeable police presence during each game to ensure security. Additionally, enhanced security measures will be implemented at the hotel where the Pakistan cricket team will be staying.

This decision prioritizes the safety and security of all stakeholders involved in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, maintaining the integrity of the tournament while addressing valid security concerns.
