Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived in Islamabad on a two-day official visit, receiving a grand welcome from Pakistan’s leadership. President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, along with First Lady Aseefa Bhutto and key ministers, greeted him at Nur Khan Airbase. Erdogan’s special aircraft was escorted into Pakistani airspace by Pakistan Air Force jets, and a ceremonial 21-gun salute marked his arrival.
Children dressed in traditional attire presented bouquets to Erdogan and the Turkish First Lady, while a military band played in the background. Pakistani and Turkish flags waved as a symbol of the deep-rooted ties between the two nations. The visit, which follows a recent meeting between President Zardari and Erdogan in Istanbul, is expected to enhance diplomatic, economic, and strategic cooperation.
High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council Meeting
A key highlight of Erdogan’s visit is the seventh session of the Pakistan-Turkiye High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council (HLSCC), co-chaired by him and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The HLSCC is the highest decision-making forum between the two countries, overseeing cooperation across multiple sectors, including trade, investment, energy, defence, education, and technology.
At the conclusion of the session, a joint declaration will be issued, and several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) are expected to be signed. The two leaders will also hold bilateral meetings and address a joint press conference. The last HLSCC meeting was held in Islamabad in February 2020, and this session is expected to build on previous agreements, further solidifying Pakistan-Turkiye ties.
Strengthening Economic and Business Collaboration
President Erdogan and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will also address the Pakistan-Turkiye Business and Investment Forum, which will bring together key investors, corporate leaders, and government officials from both countries. The forum aims to boost bilateral trade and investment in key sectors such as banking, finance, tourism, infrastructure, and energy.

With Turkiye being a significant economic partner, both nations are keen to explore new opportunities for collaboration. Pakistan is looking to benefit from Turkiye’s expertise in industrial development and technology, while Turkish investors see Pakistan as a key market for expanding business operations in South Asia. The forum is expected to lead to major economic agreements that will deepen economic engagement between the two countries.
Historic Ties and Future Prospects
Pakistan and Turkiye share a strong historical bond, rooted in cultural, religious, and diplomatic relations. The two countries have consistently supported each other on global platforms, with Pakistan backing Turkiye on issues like Cyprus and Turkiye advocating for Pakistan’s stance on Kashmir.
Erdogan’s visit marks a significant step in enhancing this brotherhood, with both nations looking to strengthen their strategic alliance. The agreements signed during this visit are expected to pave the way for increased trade, defence cooperation, and cultural exchanges, further solidifying Pakistan-Turkiye relations.
