Pakistani-Canadian businessman set on fire in Canada

Rao was attacked by an unidentified man who first doused him in a fire accelerant and then set him ablaze before fleeing the scene.

A man of Pakistani descent, Rahat Rao, is currently fighting for his life in an intensive care unit after a horrific attack at his store in Surrey, British Columbia, on Friday. Rao, a well-known member of the local Canadian-Pakistani community, operates a currency exchange business in the Surrey Central area.

Details of the Attack

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) reported that Rao was attacked by an unidentified man who first doused him in a fire accelerant and then set him ablaze before fleeing the scene. Eyewitnesses recounted the terrifying moments of the attack. A witness told Global News that she was inside the store when a man engulfed in flames came running from the back, screaming. A relative of Rao mentioned that the incident occurred during a robbery attempt.

Police Investigation and Public Appeal

In response to the attack, the RCMP have released a photograph of the suspected attacker and his getaway vehicle, described as a white Mini Cooper. The police have urged the public to come forward with any information that could aid in apprehending the suspect. Despite the brutal nature of the attack, no clear motive has been identified yet.

Speculations and Past Incidents

Media outlets have speculated about a potential connection between this attack and the killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was murdered outside Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey last year. Rao was questioned by local police following Nijjar’s killing, although the details of this questioning have not been disclosed.

Safety Concerns and Prior Warnings

There were prior concerns about Rao’s safety. Reports indicate that the RCMP had intelligence suggesting a potential threat to Rao, prompting them to advise him to install additional security cameras at his business. These concerns, however, were not publicly elaborated on, leaving the exact nature of the threats ambiguous.

Community in Shock

The attack on Rao has sent shockwaves through the local Canadian-Pakistani community, where he is known as an active and prominent member. Community leaders and members have expressed their horror and sadness over the incident, rallying in support of Rao and his family during this difficult time.
