Pakistani footballer Muhammad Riaz is forced to sell Jalebis following financial hardships. His video of selling Jalebis at a shop recently went viral on social media, sparking debate and concern for the footballer.
Financial challenges brought a sharp turn in the life of the footballer, who is now selling Jalebis on a roadside stall in Hangu. Riaz had represented Pakistan in the Asian Games in 2018.
Riaz says his financial condition worsened after the provincial government imposed a ban on departmental sports. The initiative was taken to support the club-based model for sports which ended up losing hundreds of athletes their jobs and financial stability.
“I waited for years for the return of departmental sports,” Riaz told local media. “When the Prime Minister announced the revival, I felt hopeful, but the delay has been unbearable.”
He said financial hardships forced him to look for other ways of earning. “I had to find an honest way to make a living, which is why I’m here selling jalebis instead of playing football,” he explained.
His story has highlighted the issue of financial hardships and lack of government support to athletes. The Pakistan Football League announced a prize money of Rs 1 million for the footballer.
PFL Chairman Farhan Junejo stated, “Muhammad Riaz is a prime example of the talented footballers in Pakistan who have been overlooked due to lack of opportunities. We are committed to supporting him and ensuring that his talent is recognized.”

Riaz expressed his gratitude to the PFL and Chairman Junejo, saying, “I am thankful for this opportunity to revive my love for football. I will work with the PFL to ensure that no other player is neglected.”
The organization will also provide free kits and training facilities to football players in Hangu.
