Pakistani Para-athlete Haider Ali Competes for Gold

Pakistani para-athlete Haider Ali faces funding and infrastructure challenges as he competes to win his fourth medal at the Paris 2024 Games.

Pakistani para-athlete Haider Ali is poised to make history at the Paris Paralympic Games, attempting to win his fourth medal in the Men’s Discus Throw F37 event. Ali, who holds three Paralympic medals, is currently in bronze position with a throw of 52.28 meters. Despite his remarkable achievement, he faces stiff competition from Uzbekistan’s Tolibboy Yuldashev, who leads with a 53.48-meter throw, and Canada’s Jesse Zesseu, who holds the silver with 52.81 meters. This contest will test Ali’s mettle as he aims to surpass his rivals and retain his title.

Ali’s journey to the Paralympics has not been easy. Diagnosed with cerebral palsy, he has faced numerous challenges throughout his career, including limited financial support and inadequate training facilities. “I don’t have any sponsors, and participating is always an issue,” Ali shared. Despite these hurdles, he remains determined, training in less-than-ideal conditions in Gujranwala, often in flooded fields, with his children retrieving the discus for him. His relentless pursuit of excellence has made him one of Pakistan’s greatest athletes.

A Legacy Built on Perseverance

Haider Ali’s journey began in Faisalabad in 2005, when his talent was first spotted at a training camp. He made his international debut at the 2006 FESPIC Games in Kuala Lumpur, winning one gold and three silver medals. Over the years, Ali has amassed an impressive array of accolades, including a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics, a bronze at the 2016 Rio Games, and Pakistan’s first-ever gold at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics in the Men’s Discus Throw F37.

His success is a testament to the National Paralympic Committee of Pakistan’s (NPC) commitment to his development, providing him with professional coaching and international exposure. Ali’s perseverance and dedication to para sports have not only earned him individual accolades but have also raised the profile of Pakistan in the global para sports community.

Overcoming Challenges to Achieve Excellence

Despite his accomplishments, Ali has faced significant challenges in his pursuit of excellence. He has had to contend with limited resources, including inadequate sports facilities and the absence of domestically manufactured, specialized equipment for para-athletes. “We do not have proper facilities or grounds,” he lamented, highlighting the struggles faced by para-athletes in Pakistan. Yet, Ali’s determination to succeed remains unwavering. “My goal is clear — to win for my country,” he declared.

Ali’s inspiring journey also reflects the broader issues confronting para sports in Pakistan, such as inadequate infrastructure and misconceptions about the competitiveness of para sports. NPC Secretary Imran Jamil Shami emphasized the need for more support and understanding. “Addressing these challenges is crucial to promoting inclusivity and advancing para sports in Pakistan,” Shami stated.

Haider Ali’s remarkable achievements and unwavering spirit serve as an inspiration to many. Despite living with cerebral palsy, he has shown that with dedication and resilience, one can overcome any obstacle. His story is not just about personal triumph but also about paving the way for future generations of Pakistani para-athletes. As Ali continues his quest for another medal at the Paris Paralympics, he remains a symbol of hope and determination for all.
