The Pakistani freelancing community is once again demanding Paypal. Since morning, “Paypal” is among the top Twitter trends in Pakistan.
To clarify, PayPal is a financial technology company that allows its users to easily exchange money online. The company is fully functional in more than 190 countries with over 361 million active users worldwide. However, it is not available in Pakistan. As a result, the freelancing community faces problems while accessing payment in exchange for their services.
The Pakistani freelancing community often demands that the government should take steps for Paypal in Pakistan. In response, the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication during Imran Khan’s tenure announced that PayPal is not coming to the country on account of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) objection, fearing terror financing, as well as, the international gateway is already serving major chunk of the Pakistani clients having accounts in the UAE and other countries.

On the other hand, now that Pakistan has a new government, the freelancing community is once again demanding Paypal. It is urging the government to take note of the difficulties faced by the freelancing community in terms of online payment.
Pakistan heading towards success?
Pertinent to mention, Pakistan has a growing community of more than 1 million freelancers. Furthermore, ranks number 4 among the top fastest-growing freelancing countries in the world. In 2020, Pakistan saw a 47% increase in freelancer revenues. This was ofcourse during the pandemic when online business grew as people looked for other ways to earn an income.

Pakistan has millions of dollars belonging to its freelancers stuck in PayPal accounts. Availing the services of PayPal will eliminate the third-party commission fee as the company sends payments directly to one’s bank account for a nominal fee. Its landing in the domestic market would, definitely, attract foreign currency inside Pakistan, thereby, increasing its foreign reserves.
