The 12th edition of the International Defence Exhibition and Seminar (IDEAS) 2024 commenced on November 19 at Karachi Expo Centre, drawing global attention to Pakistan’s evolving defence capabilities. Inaugurated by Federal Minister for Defence and Defence Production Khawaja Muhammad Asif, the four-day event will run until November 22, attracting 560 exhibitors and 350 high-level delegations from 55 countries.
Hub for Global Defence Collaboration
IDEAS, held biennially since its inception in 2000, has emerged as a premier platform for defence manufacturers, entrepreneurs, researchers, and policymakers to foster international cooperation. This year’s exhibition marks a new milestone, with full capacity at the Karachi Expo Centre. Notably, 55% of participants are international, hailing from regions such as Turkey, China, Iran, the UK, North America, and Europe.

Cutting-Edge Defence Technologies on Display
IDEAS 2024 is showcasing a range of advanced defence technologies and equipment, including Pakistan’s domestically developed Haider Main Battle Tank and Shahpar III drone. The Haider tank, a collaboration between Pakistan’s Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT) and Chinese company Norinco, exemplifies Pakistan’s increasing expertise in military manufacturing.
Other notable exhibits include the Al-Khalid and Al-Zarrar tanks, the latest Super Mushshak Aircraft, and contributions from startups in artificial intelligence and defence, supported by the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) and other institutions.
Minister Highlights Defence Industry Growth
In his inaugural address, Khawaja Asif emphasized Pakistan’s potential as a global hub for defence research, manufacturing, and exports. He noted the industry’s progression in quality and reliability, allowing Pakistani products to compete on the international stage.
Asif highlighted IDEAS as a “regional gateway” for manufacturers and suppliers to explore partnerships through joint ventures and outsourcing. He emphasized the vital role of technology in addressing modern security challenges, advocating for its responsible use to create a safer world.
“Pakistan, being a responsible state, is committed to international peace and stability,” he remarked, adding that the government seeks meaningful dialogue on equal terms to resolve bilateral issues and promote regional harmony.
Security Measures in Karachi
To ensure the safety of international guests, strict security measures have been implemented across Karachi. A ban on public gatherings under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure is in effect until November 24. The Sindh government has also closed private schools near key routes to the Expo Centre for four days.
These measures, enforced by local authorities, aim to maintain order and prevent disruptions during the high-profile event, which includes frequent movement of dignitaries.
