Rapid transformation towards digitalization is witnessed especially after the outbreak of Covid-19 when social distancing was necessitated and the country experienced massive lockdowns to curb the spread of disease. There has been a great focus on digitizing financial services and moving towards e-commerce to reduce costs and increase sales while avoiding the spread of disease. Similarly, Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) has recently announced Pakistan’s first digital census that will collect valuable information for a progressive Pakistan.

PBS organized an extensive training for census enumerators in 27 districts across Pakistan to ensure uniformity & quality through the process.
Pakistan’s first digital census will provide valuable information about population growth, urban-rural ratio, gender, age, literacy, languages, religion, disability, migration, ethnicity, and economic activities.

According to the PBS, through this initiative, monitoring every step of the way would become easier, dedicated to an accurate, inclusive & error-free process.
Worthy Chief Statistician, Dr Naeem-Uz-Zafar, visited Thar and Karachi to oversee the testing of the census software and application to ensure the smooth running of the process.
Moreover, delegation led by Chief Statistician Dr Naeem Uz Zafar, had a meeting with Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah in Karachi to apprise him about the upcoming 1st digital census & PBS’s commitment to a transparent, accurate & inclusive digital census process.
Functions of Population Census Wing of PBS
The main functions of Population Census Wing are as under:
- Planning and execution of decennial Population & Housing Census.
- Processing and dissemination of data in the form of Census Reports.
- Analysis of census data and demographic research.
- Evaluation of census results.
- Intercensal sample studies/surveys in related areas.
- Supply of census data to the data users.
- Tabulation of data to meet specific demand of data users
