Petrol prices unchanged in Pakistan despite global drop

: Government imposes Rs. 70–80 per litre levy, redirects funds to development projects and IMF commitments

Petrol prices will remain unchanged for the next fifteen days of April 2025. Instead, the government has raised the petrol levy by Rs. 70—Rs. 80 per litre. The ministry issued the notification on Tuesday.

As per the official statement, petrol will remain at Rs254.63 per litre, while high-speed diesel (HSD) will continue to be sold at Rs258.64 per litre. The development came amid speculations among the public regarding the significant drop in the petrol prices in the fortnight review. The petrol prices were expected to drop by Rs.10/per litre for the second half of April. There is a Rs 70 per litre levy on petroleum and high-speed diesel. It is the highest level of petroleum levy imposed on citizens in the national history.

Petrol prices in Pakistan were sustained despite the reduction in the price of petrol and diesel by $6 per barrel and $5 per barrel, respectively, in the international market amid trade tariff wars. The levy was imposed following an amendment to the 1961 Petroleum Products Ordinance.

PM Shehbaz noted that although global oil prices have declined, the benefit will not be passed on to consumers. Instead, the government will utilise the amount collected from the petroleum levy for the development initiatives in Balochistan and Sindh, to gain support from coalition partners.

He announced that the province’s most critical national highway would be upgraded to meet motorway standards and dualised to improve connectivity and infrastructure in the region.

Moreover, this amount will also be used to cover the shortfalls in tax collection and conditions set by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

With the government keeping the petrol prices unchanged, the public will continue to bear the burden. As per the reports, Rs. 96-97 is charged in taxes on each litre of petrol in Pakistan. The nation is also expecting a drop in electricity prices.
