PIA passenger arrested in Paris after assaulting crew over smoking ban

The passenger has been permanently blacklisted by PIA and will no longer be permitted to travel with the national carrier.

A passenger aboard Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight PK749 from Islamabad to Paris was arrested upon arrival at Charles de Gaulle Airport after physically assaulting crew members who tried to stop him from smoking during the flight. The airline confirmed the incident, emphasizing its zero-tolerance policy toward such behaviour and commending its staff for their professionalism under pressure.

Smoking Attempt Sparks Mid-Flight Chaos

The trouble began mid-air when the passenger, identified only as Safeer, attempted to smoke a cigarette onboard the Paris-bound flight, in violation of aviation regulations. A female flight attendant approached the passenger and repeatedly asked him to put out the cigarette, but he refused to comply. Instead of backing down, the passenger became aggressive and verbally abusive.

According to a PIA spokesperson, the situation quickly escalated. The passenger twisted the flight attendant’s arm and struck her on the back, injuring her. When a flight steward and the captain intervened to de-escalate the situation, the passenger tried to attack them as well. Crew members managed to disarm the passenger and seize the cigarette before the situation could get further out of hand.

Protocols Activated, Authorities Alerted

Following aviation protocol, the flight captain immediately contacted French authorities during the flight. By the time the plane landed in Paris, law enforcement officers were waiting on the tarmac. French police boarded the aircraft and arrested the unruly passenger. The affected crew members gave formal statements, and a medical examination was conducted to assess the injuries sustained during the assault.

A police report was filed, and authorities have since launched legal proceedings against the passenger. The airline noted that French laws related to mid-flight violence and non-compliance with safety regulations are stringent, and it is expected that the case will be treated with severity.

Lifetime Ban and Official Response

The passenger has been permanently blacklisted by Pakistan International Airlines and will no longer be permitted to travel with the national carrier. In an official statement, the PIA spokesperson praised the crew for handling the situation with “remarkable professionalism” and reiterated the airline’s firm stance against any violation of aviation laws or threats to staff and passenger safety. “PIA staff acted with professionalism throughout the ordeal,” the spokesperson said. “The crew and captain managed to defuse the situation and protect fellow passengers. French laws are very strict in such matters, and we hope no leniency will be shown in this case.”

Separately, the airline also addressed ongoing confusion surrounding its flight operations to the United Kingdom. PIA clarified that the UK Department for Transport has not made any decision regarding the resumption of flights from Pakistan. Contrary to circulating rumours, no official communication has been issued to confirm a ban or lifting of restrictions. The airline assured that Pakistani aviation authorities remain in active coordination with UK regulators and are hopeful about meeting the necessary audit targets to restore flight operations in the near future.
