PM Khan gears up for local body elections with new committee

The formation of PTI's first Supreme Committee comes as the party faced a major setback in KP local body polls despite the region being PTI's stronghold. Due to the defeat, PM Khan vowed to personally oversee PTI's strategy for the local body polls.

Following PTI’s shocking defeat in the first phase of KP local body elections, PM Khan formed a 21-member Supreme Committee. Through the committee, PM Khan will devise a political strategy for the second phase of KP local polls and the upcoming Punjab local polls.

According to reports, the first meeting will take place today in Islamabad and PM Khan will chair the meeting. As per sources, Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar, Punjab Governor Muhammad Sarwar, local government minister Mehmood-ur-Rasheed, Punjab Assembly speaker Asad Qaiser, KP CM Mehmood Khan, and federal ministers including Fawad Chaudhry, Hammad Azhar, and Shafqat Mehmood will attend the meeting.

Federal Minister Fawad Chaudhry also confirmed the meeting on Twitter. He said that PTI will discuss important organizational and policy issues in this consultative meeting.

“A meeting of the senior leadership of PTI will be held today under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister. Important organizational and policy issues will be discussed in this consultative meeting. I will inform the media about the decisions of the meeting,” Fawad Chaudhry tweeted.

Moreover, sources stated that PTI will also take major decisions regarding the upcoming Punjab local body elections. The PTI meeting will review the mayoral candidates for Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Multan, DG Khan, Sahiwal, Bahawalpur, Sargodha, and Rawalpindi.

Major set back for PTI

Most importantly, the formation of the Supreme Committee comes as PM Khan vowed to personally oversee PTI’s strategy for the local body polls due to the KP setback.

“PTI made mistakes in 1st phase of KP LG elections & paid the price. Wrong candidate selection was a major cause,” PM Khan said. On another note, he did express hope that PTI will come out stronger in the next elections.

“From now on I will personally be overseeing PTI’s LG election strategy in 2nd phase of KP LG elections & LG elections across Pak. InshaAllah PTI will come out stronger,” he further added.

JUI-F took a strong lead in the KP local body elections, leaving PTI behind. According to unofficial results, JUI-F won in 16 tehsil council seats out of 64 while the PTI won in 14. Independent candidates won 10, ANP six, PML-N three, and Jamaat-e-Islami two.

As per public opinion, PTI lost due to the weak performance of MNAs and MPAs. As a result, KPK’s population moved towards other political parties. However, in PM Khan’s opinion, the party lost due to the wrong candidate selection.
