PM Shehbaz eyes PML-Q support as party breaks into pieces

PM Shehbaz offered the PML-Q chief to jointly contest the by-polls. The polls are scheduled on 20 seats of the Punjab Assembly where PTI had won in 2018 general elections.

Pakistan’s political atmosphere is once again brimming with intense activity ahead of the Punjab by-poll which is scheduled for July 17th. Regarding the matter, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of PML-N met with PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain.

According to details, PM Shehbaz offered the PML-Q chief to jointly contest the by-polls. The polls are scheduled on 20 seats of the Punjab Assembly where PTI had won in 2018 general elections and its MPAs had later defected to the PML-N and faced disqualification.

Pertinent to mention, PML-N had made the same offer to PPP earlier which the latter accepted. However, it is yet to be seen whether PML-Q will accept PML-N’s offer or not.

On the other hand, the PML-Q is currently divided into two groups one backing the incumbent government and the other, led by Chaudhry Parvez Elahi, standing with the PTI.

Back in March, ahead of the controversial no-confidence motion against Imran Khan, there were reports of internal rifts among PML-Q. However, Chaudhry Shujaat rejected the rumors. He had released a statement clarifying that his family and the party are “on the same page”. Shujaat also said that all political decisions were taken in consultation with him and had his “full support.”

Fast forward to today, the party has broken into two parts. Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain’s nephew Chaudhry Hussain Elahi has parted ways with the party.

He made the announcement on his official Twitter handle. Chaudhry Moonis Elahi, son of Punjab Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, and Member National Assembly also retweeted Chaudhry Hussain Elahi’s tweet.

“I’ve always said my country is first for me and keeping that in mind I have decided that my political journey with PMLQ must come to an end. Will be deciding my political future with Moonis Elahi but cannot be in a party that supports Shehbaz Sharif-led Imported Government,” Hussain Elahi announced on Twitter.

Chaudhry Shujaat wants to see his children with PML-N in the future, sources added. Meanwhile, Pervaiz Elahi’s son Moonis Elahi is eyeing his political future with PTI.
