Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Islamabad chapter, General Secretary Shujaur Rehman has challenged selection of ex Chief Minister Punjab, Shahbaz Sharif as PML-N President in the Election Commission of Pakistan, sources said on Tuesday.

Ever since the undisputed supreme leader of PML-N has been declared disqualified, PML-N has been visibly fragmenting into different groups. Rehman’s challenge to Shahbaz’s appointment as President brings to light the intraparty divisions and disagreements, not conducive to maintaining a united voter base.
When a prominent leader like Rahman’s questions the competence of intraparty election process, PMLN’s credibility comes under scrutiny. Is nepotism the only way to rise amongst the ranks of the PML-N?
The PML-N leader said that the ECP should ensure that all the political parties implement the ECP code of conduct in letter and spirit, stressing Pakistan needs unity. He said, that even after repeatedly raising his voice on this issue no one has listened to him”.
Rehman took the stance in his application, that intra-party elections conducted should be declared illegal by the ECP. Shujaur Rehman asked ECP to seek the record of the intra-party election from all union, provincial and national councils.
The discontented PML-N leader said “the PML-N is like a well of clean water, and flatterers, money launders and corrupt are trying to contaminate it with their dirty feet” making it clear that “dirt will not be mixed in that well of clean water”. He said, “Until he is alive, he will not allow anyone to add filth in it.” He will try his best to clean the party from flatters and influential persons, he maintained.

The General Secretary claimed, that the procedure adopted by the PML-N for the selection of Shahbaz Sharif as party President is not acceptable for him and many other party leaders. The source further said that the challenge has created an uncertain environment within the PML-N, adding that many of the party leaders have endorsed Shujaur Rehman’s stance.

Shujaur Rehman has been associated with the PML-N for the past three decades. He has been actively participating in party decisions for the past 16 years. He has remained active in the democratic struggle and has been imprisoned for it. His views about the party reflect his long service and dedication.

The PML-N leader was also active during restoration of judiciary movement against the Musharraf regime. He is a political leader cum activist, championing democratic causes. Shujaur Rehman said, “Democracy is crucial for the development, progress, and unity of the country. State institutions like the ECP were being created for the supervision of democratic system.” He hoped that the ECP will reconsider Shahbaz’s appointment.

He termed the March 13, 2018 convention of intraparty elections a “show off”, adding that the party leadership had made “mockery” of its workers. He requested the ECP to seek all the records on party President selection from the PML-N senior leader Ahsan Iqbal.
