Political parties react to the decision to ban PTI

Atta Tarar's statements did not go well with various political leaders who outrightly condemned the government while warning the possible implications of the decision on Pakistan.

Various political parties including JI, JUI-F, ANP, and others have condemned the government’s decision to ban PTI.

In a press conference on Monday, Federal Minister Atta Tarar claimed that the government is mulling over banning Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-I-Insaf. According to Tarar, PTI is a threat to the stability of Pakistan hence immediate measures are required to stop the party from functioning.

Atta Tarar’s statements did not go well with various political leaders who outrightly condemned the government while warning about the possible implications of the decision on Pakistan.

Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman of Jamaat-e-Islami in his statement called the decision a reflection of “fascism”. He further said, “There is no room for these decisions in democratic societies. This country has a constitution and courts. Only parties that believe in authoritarian thinking can take such tyrannical decisions.”

Meanwhile, the Pakistan People’s Party says the government announced its decision without consulting them.

Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman of JUI-F said there is no point in exerting force against political parties. “Using force against political forces is not the solution to the problems. This will further increase the political chaos, if all the institutions are reduced to the scope defined by the constitution, the country can recover,” said Fazl-ur-Rehman.

“The sooner powerful circles understand this fact, the better off the government and themselves will be, otherwise, the deterioration will increase. The solution to all the problems lies in conducting fresh and transparent elections in the country,” he added further.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi of Awaam Pakistan Party questioned the intent of the government behind the announcement. He said the government lacks authority to ban any political party. He accused the government of fostering division instead of unity.

Aftab Sherpao of the Qaumi Watan Party also dismissed the decision of the government and said that such actions would intensify the political instability in Pakistan.
