WhatsApp, the popular messaging platform owned by Meta, has announced that it will discontinue support for certain older iPhone models starting May 5, 2025. This decision affects users of iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus—devices that are over a decade old and unable to upgrade to iOS versions compatible with the app’s future requirements.
Which iPhones Are Affected?
The models affected are the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, all of which were released between 2013 and 2014. These devices cannot be updated to iOS 15.1, which will become the minimum requirement for WhatsApp. The iPhone 6, in particular, holds a significant legacy, having sold over 220 million units and ranking as one of the best-selling smartphones in history. While many users have upgraded to newer devices, a fraction of users still rely on these older models, often for secondary or emergency purposes.

Why Is WhatsApp Making This Change?
According to Meta, the decision to drop support for older devices stems from the limitations of outdated operating systems. As technology advances, newer versions of iOS include updated APIs and enhanced technologies necessary for WhatsApp to introduce new features and optimize performance. Supporting older systems restricts app innovation and consumes valuable resources.
WABetaInfo, a trusted source for WhatsApp updates, explained:
“Newer versions of iOS include updated APIs and improved technologies that WhatsApp relies on to deliver new features. By not supporting older versions, WhatsApp will be able to optimize the app and introduce new features that simply wouldn’t be possible with outdated operating systems.”
What Does This Mean for Affected Users?
From May 5, 2025, iPhone models running iOS versions earlier than 15.1 will no longer support WhatsApp. Users with these devices will have to either upgrade their operating systems (if possible) or transition to a newer smartphone.
Fortunately, WhatsApp provides a five-month notice period to help users adapt. Affected users are encouraged to back up their chats via iCloud and use WhatsApp’s Chat Transfer feature to seamlessly restore their conversations on a compatible device.
Upgrade Options for iPhone Users
The upcoming iPhone SE, expected in 2024, may be a cost-effective option. Rumored to feature a modern iPhone 14-inspired design and Apple’s latest AI-driven technologies, the new SE will provide at least five years of software updates, ensuring long-term compatibility with apps like WhatsApp. Alternatively, flagship devices such as the iPhone 15 or the soon-to-be-released iPhone 16 offer the latest advancements in hardware and software.
