Prominent businessman Hamid Zaman & Tariq Shafi and Senator Saifullah Niazi arrested by FIA?

Federal Investigating Agency (FIA) is raiding across Pakistan to arrest corporate and political leaders affiliated with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf

According to TV news, Federal Investigating Agency (FIA) is raiding across Pakistan to arrest corporate and political leaders affiliated with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). First in the lot comes Tariq Shafi, a senior advisor to Crescent Bahuman Limited. TV media reported last night that FIA personnel were stationed next to his house in Karachi before his arrest and were awaiting orders from Islamabad on when to arrest him. Second, comes Hamid Zaman, founder of Bareeze group and a highly respected corporate giant, who has been arrested by FIA from his office on Waris road in Lahore.

Senator Saifullah Niazi has been arrested from the premises of the Parliament by the FIA personnel, as per sources. As of now, FIA is rejecting the arrest of Saifullah Niazi from Parliament premises. PTI leaders Asad Umar, Fawad Chaudry, Babar Awan, Shireen Mazari, and Farrukh Habib are claiming that he was arrested within the premises of the Senate. They are condemning his arrest and calling it outright fascism. A few days ago, FIA also raided his house and took his cell phone and laptop, along with his wife’s phone. It is believed that his laptop was confiscated on the grounds that it might have a list containing the complete details of the PTI tiger force.

This appears to be an attempt by the Shehbaz Sharif government to build a case against Imran Khan in reference to foreign funding case within the timeline of 2011-2013. As the matter is already in the Islamabad High Court following the decision of the Election Commission of Pakistan against the PTI, the Shehbaz Sharif government is trying to present the following arrests in the backdrop of foreign funding case and labeling it a threat to the security interests of Pakistan.

Political analyst at Global Village Space (GVS) has spoken to PTI leader, who believes that all the arrests are connected with the upcoming long march of Imran Khan. The government is trying to restrict the long march procession.

The government, on the other hand, so far has taken protective measures in the form of placing containers at all entry and exit points of Islamabad. The territory that Shahbaz government is governing that is now restricted to only 27 km. The country’s capital city appears to be under siege already, with hundreds of containers encircling it. There is a common perception existing in the city that Islamabad has been converted into a dry port.
