PTI weighs options for key Punjab assembly posts

As PTI forms government in Punjab after Supreme Court’s decision, Pakistani politics is in a state of flux.

With the changing of the government in the Punjab province, both the new ruling coalition of the PTI and the PML-Q and the opposition alliance comprising PDM and some independent MPAs, have stepped up the consultation process as there are important decisions to be made.

Initially, a news circulated around social media claiming that Zain Qureshi shall be elected the next speaker of Punjab assembly. In response, many PTI supporters spoke up against the take over of dynastic politics in PTI. Many took to twitter to express their views.

Zain Qureshi is the son of Shah Mehmood Qureshi, one of PTI’s most prominent leaders.

Now sources claim that PTI-PMLQ has finalized Sibtain Turi for the office of Speaker Punjab Assembly. However, the final decision is yet to be announced.

A day ago, the Punjab Government and its allies decided to move a no-confidence motion against Deputy Speaker Dost Muhammad Mazari. According to sources, action will be taken within 14 days after the no-confidence motion is submitted in the Punjab Assembly. Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s son Zain Qureshi, Mahmoodur Rashid, ex-CM Usman Buzdar and Mian Aslam Iqbal, who had also been nominated for the speaker’s office, are now potential candidates for the seat of Deputy Speaker Punjab Assembly.

On 26th July, 202022, the Supreme Court not only annulled the ruling of Mazari regarding the election of the Chief Minister of Punjab but the top court also nominated Pervez Elahi as Punjab’s new CM. While Elahi became the new Chief Minister, the office of the speaker became vacant and the deputy speaker shall also be removed using the no-confidence motion.
