PTI’s Ehsaas Rehribaan vendor carts destroyed in Islamabad

PTI Chairman Imran Khan shared pictures of dismantled street vendor carts in Islamabad's I-10 sector. He also lashed out at the PML-N government for targeting the poor despite rising inflation.

Several street vendor carts installed by the previous government have been destroyed by authorities in Islamabad. Reacting to the development, PTI Chairman and former Prime Minister Imran Khan lashed out at the incumbent government for demolishing the street vendor carts.

Taking to Twitter, Imran Khan shared pictures of dismantled street vendor carts in Islamabad’s I-10 sector. Pertinent to mention that the carts were provided to street vendors under PTI’s Ehsaas Rehribaan program.

The former government had launched the Ehsaas Rehribaan initiative to bring poor and small pedlars into the economic mainstream by providing an enabling environment to them. The initiative had dismantled the monopoly of shopkeepers, who used to receive handsome rent from street vendors on monthly basis, and provided protection to them from anti-encroachment operations.

However, it seems that the carts were destroyed and the products of the vendors were scattered on the road in what could have been an anti-encroachment operation. Nevertheless, the PTI Chief lashed out at the PML-N government for targeting the poor.

“At a time of rising inflation and unemployment this imported government showed its callousness again by demolishing street vendor carts in Islamabad’s I-10 sector provided by our government under the Ehsaas Rergribaan program. Condemnable inhumane act deliberately targeting the poor and vulnerable,” Imran Khan said on Twitter.

PML-N against PTI welfare projects

This is not the first time that PTI has accused the government of shutting down its welfare projects. Shortly after the PML-N took over governance in April last year, reports emerged that the PML-N government had decided to close down ‘shelter homes’ and ‘soup kitchens’ initiated by the government of PTI. PML-N received a lot of criticism after which it released an official statement saying that no welfare projects will be shut down.

On the other hand, the PML-N-led government has been rather critical of the PTI’s welfare projects. Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal once criticized the former government for over-selling the reach of Ehsaas soup kitchens which led to a strong reaction from Ehsaas founder Dr. Sania Nishtar.

In another instance, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that the country’s economic situation is worse than our expectations and the Langar Khana (soup kitchens) cannot be run, while the real job of the government is to provide employment.
