Qatar becomes the first Gulf country on US Visa waiver program

The State Department of the USA and the Department of Homeland Security said Qatari citizens would be able to apply no later than December 1st, 2024.

Qatar became the first Gulf country to be admitted into the US Visa waiver program. Citizens of Qatar can now travel to the USA visa-free for 90 days.

The State Department of the USA and the Department of Homeland Security said Qatari citizens would be able to apply no later than December 1st, 2024.

“Qatar’s fulfillment of the stringent security requirements to join the Visa Waiver Program will deepen our strategic partnership and enhance the flow of people and commerce between our two countries,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said.

“Qatar’s entry will make travel between the United States and Qatar safer, more secure, and easier for both Americans and Qataris,” he added further.

Qatar enjoys strong relations with the USA, designating it as a strong ‘non-NATO’ ally of the USA in 2022. Qatar has been working closely with the USA to broker a ceasefire deal with Israel for its war on the Gaza Strip. Israel’s onslaught on the Gaza Strip is marking one year.

In Tuesday’s statement, the administration of US President Joe Biden said Qatar “has been an exceptional partner for the United States, and our strategic relationship has only grown stronger over the past few years”.

“The Visa Waiver Program is one of our most successful security initiatives. Qatar’s participation in the program increases information sharing regarding one of the world’s busiest travel and transfer hubs, strengthening the security of the United States,” said Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas. “I commend our Qatari partners for meeting the stringent requirements that this agreement entails and look forward to our continued work together on behalf of our respective countries,” the official added.

The US claims to have a strong defense relationship with Qatar. Qatar will be the 42nd country to be added to the USA Visa Waiver program.
