Rao Anwar makes big revelations on Benazir Bhutto’s assassination

Currently, Rao Anwar is out on bail in cases where he is accused of being involved in the murder of 400 people in fake police encounters.

The former senior officer of the Sindh Police Rao Anwar has made explosive revelations regarding the murder case of Benazir Bhutto. In an exclusive interview with a private news channel, Rao Anwar claimed that he did not sign the report of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) constituted to probe the murder of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto on purpose.

According to details, Rao Anwar said he did not sign the JIT report because the then interior minister Rehman Malik had pressurized him to implicate former president and retired general Pervez Musharraf.

Rao Anwar said Rehman Malik wanted Musharraf named without recording the former president’s statement or interrogating him. Moreover, Rao Anwar has told the media that he is ready to give his statement under oath.

The former cop also raised doubts about Rehman Malik’s role and believed that the former interior minister should have been probed in the case since he was the head of Benazir Bhutto’s security at the time, the media reported.

Benazir Bhutto’s assassination

The assassination of two-time former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto took place in Rawalpindi on 27 December 2007. Shots were fired at her after a political rally at Liaqat National Bagh, and a suicide bomb was detonated immediately following the shooting.

An anti-terrorism court had exonerated five men accused of involvement in the attack. The men were accused of being members of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). The court had also convicted and sentenced two senior police officers for willful negligence and tampering with evidence during the investigation into the murder. Pervez Musharraf, who had denied any involvement in the murder, was declared a fugitive by the same court for failing to appear during hearings.
