Prime Minister Imran Khan is expected to lay the foundation of Phase-1 of the Ravi Riverfront Urban Development Project on Tuesday, as he takes part in the groundbreaking of the new plan as chief guest and leads the inauguration of the largest infrastructure development plan in the country’s history.

The riverfront urban development project is a new intitiative by the government under the leadership of PM Imran who is eager to revive the economy battered by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Rs5 trillion development project spread over 100,000 acres
The project amasses a total of 100,000 acres of land on the riverfront of river Ravi and will take its inspiration from the modern city of Dubai and other construction projects by the UAE. The new development project is expected to create investment opportunities, employment for the local people and new business.

The expected investment for the Ravi development project is of Rs5 trillion for creating the urban project situated right next to Punjab’s capital Lahore. The infrastructure project is going to be based on international standards and will help to ease some of the burden on Lahore, which has suffered from rapid urbanization and crowding, leading to a host of problems such as increasing pollution (both land and air), shortage of clean drinking water, inadequate drainage facilities.

The urban development project will be a beacon of hope for Pakistan as the development of a new planned urban city and a large-scale urban development project was last undertaken by former president Ayub Khan when he sought to build Islamabad as a planned city in the 1960s to replace Karachi as Pakistan’s capital,.

The Ravi project will also include the rehabilitation of dying river Ravi which has seen lower water levels each passing year. The project also includes creation of a 46km long lake, new urban forests for greenery, 3 new barrages, 6 new water treatment plants for safe drinking water, surface water treatment plants, high rise buildings and economical housing units priced at Rs1,800,000.

PM Imran, in his latest exclusive interview with renowned jounrnalist Dr. Moeed Pirzada, commented on the Ravi Riverfront Urban Development Project terming it as a “modern city” and its sole purpose is not to save Lahore but the “planned settlement” is in addition to changes that are already planned to take place in Lahore. The project is set to save the Ravi river, one of the major 5 rivers of Pakistan while simultaneous efforts are being undertaken to raise Lahore’s water levels, which will help to bring prosperity to the whole region.
