Saudi Arabia bans commerical use of national, religious symbols

New regulations aim to preserve the sanctity of Saudi emblems and prevent misuse in commercial activities.

Saudi Arabia bans the commercial use of national, and religious symbols, and logos of the country to prevent the abuse and misuse of these symbols.

The decision, issued by Minister of Commerce Dr. Majed Al Qasabi reflects the Kingdom’s commitment to preserving the sanctity of these emblems.

The new law prohibits businesses from using national, religious, and sectarian symbols in products, promotional materials, or other commercial transactions. Violators will be punished under Municipal punitive regulations. The laws will be applied 90 days after the publication of the decision in the official gazette. This time will be given to the businesses to adjust to the new law.

The ministry highlighted the law will prohibit the use of Saudi Arabia’s national flag- which has an Islamic declaration of faith, a crossed sword, and a palm tree for commercial use. It also bans the use of images and names of Saudi leaders on printed materials, goods, special gifts, and promotional items.

“The decision is a necessary step to protect these symbols from misuse while upholding their cultural and religious significance,” the Ministry of Commerce stated.

Before these measures, the opening ceremony of Riyadh Season 2024 received a deluge of criticism when models performed on stage in front of a cube, a Kaaba-like structure.

Footage circulating online of a Kaaba-like structure with dancers circulating has caused a stir among social media users. Social media users from other Arab countries and other Muslim countries expressed outrage over the alleged disrespect of Islam’s holiest site.

Observers compared the scenes to Muslim rituals performed at the Kaaba — the stone building at the center of Mecca’s Grand Mosque that worshippers circumambulate around.

“Saudi Disgraced Islam with This This is the opening of Riyadh’s entertainment season in Saudi Arabia this year. They had a model of the Holy Kaaba where they displayed images of singers and dancers,” wrote one social media user.
