This summer, the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London is set to host an exclusive exhibition that offers a unique glimpse into the personal and professional world of global superstar Taylor Swift. Titled Taylor Swift | Songbook Trail, the free exhibition will open on July 27 and run until September 8, 2024. It will feature an array of items from Swift’s career, including costumes, instruments, awards, and storyboards, many of which are being displayed publicly for the first time.
Celebrating a Global Icon
The exhibition is designed to celebrate Taylor Swift’s immense impact on the music industry and popular culture. Senior curator of theatre and performance at the V&A, Kate Bailey, expressed the museum’s excitement about the showcase, stating, “We are delighted to be able to display a range of iconic looks worn by Taylor Swift at the V&A this summer. Each celebrates a chapter in the artist’s musical journey. Taylor Swift’s songs, like objects, tell stories, often drawing from art, history, and literature.”

Iconic Costumes and Personal Artifacts
Among the standout items in the collection are Swift’s custom cowboy boots from her early country music days and the black ruffled dress from the music video for “Fortnight,” a single from her latest album, The Tortured Poets Department. Other notable pieces include a blue, purple, and pink sparkly jacket and purple skirt from her 1989 World Tour in 2015 and a white lace gown from her “Willow” music video. These items highlight the evolution of Swift’s style and her storytelling through fashion.
Themed Trail Across the Museum
The Songbook Trail will feature 13 distinct stops, each representing a different era of Swift’s music and songwriting career. This thematic journey not only showcases her musical evolution but also offers insights into her creative process. The trail includes memorabilia from her childhood, her move to Nashville at 14 years old, and her rise to superstardom. The exhibition aims to inspire visitors to explore more about Swift’s creativity and the historical and artistic contexts that influence her work.
Designed by Tom Piper
The exhibition has been designed by Tom Piper, an acclaimed stage designer known for his work with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Tower of London poppies installation. Piper’s previous collaboration with the V&A includes the Alice: Curiouser and Curiouser exhibition. His expertise ensures that the Songbook Trail will be a visually captivating and immersive experience for visitors.
Swift’s UK Eras Tour Success
The exhibition coincides with the UK leg of Swift’s monumental Eras Tour, which has been a record-breaking success. With 17 dates across the UK, including shows in London, Edinburgh, Liverpool, and Cardiff, Swift’s tour has been described as the most lucrative concert tour in music history. The tour has significantly boosted local economies, with London alone seeing an estimated £300 million influx thanks to the “Swiftie” fandom.
