The Nissan Rogue Sport, a smaller companion to the Nissan Rogue, made its mark for a few model years before being replaced in the United States market. However, the European-market Qashqai, which shares its roots with the Rogue Sport, has returned for a new generation in 2021 and has recently undergone a series of updates.
One of the most notable visual changes to the Qashqai can be seen in the front design. Nissan has given it a fresh look, taking inspiration from the electric Ariya crossover. The previous Juke-inspired appearance with a bright U-shaped grille has been replaced by a much wider grille that draws inspiration from ancient Japanese armor scales. Accompanying this new grille are sleek headlights positioned below thin LED daytime running lights. Moving to the rear, the changes are primarily focused on updated lights with four individual elements mounted under a clear lens.
In addition to these cosmetic changes, Nissan has also provided a range of new alloy wheel designs, ranging from 18 to 20 inches, and introduced additional paint colors. Five of these colors can be paired with a contrasting black roof, offering a two-tone look.
While the interior’s basic layout remains largely unchanged, Nissan has made several updates to the trim and technology of the Qashqai. Upper trim levels now come with Alcantara upholstery on the dashboard, door panels, and central armrest. The center console also features new plastic trim with a metal-like appearance. Furthermore, the Qashqai now offers a surround-view camera system with a 3D function and an invisible hood view function. The latter helps drivers avoid damaging their wheels by providing a view of the front wheels’ position.
In terms of drivetrains, Nissan offers two options for the 2024 Qashqai. One is an as-yet-undisclosed mild-hybrid system, expected to be available in two different configurations. The second option is an unconventional hybrid system, consisting of a turbocharged three-cylinder engine, an electric motor, and a 1.8-kilowatt-hour battery pack. The three-cylinder engine functions as a generator, producing electricity that can be sent to the motor, the battery pack, or both. This unique setup allows the Qashqai to drive like an electric vehicle, complete with a one-pedal driving mode.
As for pricing, Nissan plans to announce the information later in 2024. The Qashqai will be manufactured in Sunderland, England. Unfortunately, there is no indication that the crossover will return to the United States as the second-generation Rogue Sport in the foreseeable future.
