2024 Volkswagen Atlas: A Closer Look at Its Cargo Space
The VW Atlas is no stranger to luggage tests. However, while previous tests were conducted in video form, this time, we present an official written post to evaluate the updated 2024 Volkswagen Atlas and its cargo space. The new Atlas features various changes, including a controversial interior redesign. However, one thing that remains unchanged is its cargo capacity.
The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas offers a generous 20.6 cubic feet of cargo space when the third row is folded down. This amount is on par with its competitors, such as the Toyota Grand Highlander and the Kia Telluride (which boasts 21 cubic feet of space). Although the Atlas may not clinch the top spot in this luggage test, it’s worth noting that our expert tester has honed his skills since his original video luggage test.
What sets the Atlas apart from other three-row crossovers is its impressive cargo area. The space is notably deeper than usual, thanks to a liftgate angle that starts high and additional room behind the wheel wells. While some competitors utilize underfloor space to maximize capacity, the Atlas lacks this feature. Instead, it offers a spare tire and a subwoofer that fills the dedicated underfloor area.
Despite lacking the underfloor trick used by some competitors, such as the Telluride and Pilot, the Atlas’s cargo capacity still impresses. In our luggage test, we use two midsize roller suitcases suitable for checking in at the airport, two slightly smaller black roll-aboard suitcases that fit in overhead compartments, and one smaller green roll-aboard suitcase. Additionally, we include a fancy overnight bag to add a touch of elegance to the proceedings.
In this test, the Atlas performed admirably, but fell just short of securing a podium position. With all bags accounted for except the largest gray bag, it landed in fourth place behind the Grand Highlander, Telluride, and Pilot TrailSport. However, it’s important to highlight that the Atlas came tantalizingly close to accommodating both large bags instead of the smaller green one, which would have been an even more noteworthy feat.
While the Atlas may not have claimed the title of luggage test champion, its cargo space still offers ample room for everyday use. Whether you’re packing for a family road trip or lugging around sports equipment, the Atlas provides a spacious and practical solution.
In conclusion, the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas impresses with its cargo space, falling just short of the top contenders in this luggage test. However, it remains a strong choice for those in need of a three-row crossover that can handle their hauling needs without sacrificing comfort and style.
