2025 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe and Electric i4 Get Subtle Design Updates and Tech Upgrades

BMW has unveiled the 2025 4 Series Gran Coupe and the battery-electric 2024 i4, both of which have received subtle updates from the Munich design studio. One notable change is the new matte chrome kidney grille surrounds, replacing the Satin Aluminum or Cerium Grey hues previously available. The optional M Sport Package also offers these matte chrome surrounds. The headlights have been reshaped and now feature a single LED module, along with a new daytime running light (DRL) design that can be found throughout BMW’s lineup. These DRLs create an illuminated quotation mark effect and perform a “welcome” animation when the keyholder approaches within 10 feet of the car.

The top-tier M440i and i4 M50 trims come with Full LED Headlights as standard, while lower trims can have them as part of the optional Shadowline Package. In addition to the headlights, the taillights have been replaced with Laserlight units, first seen on the BMW M4 CSL. The kidney grille surrounds on the M440i and i4 M50 are finished in high-gloss black, which is also available with the M Sport Package.

Under the hood, both the 4 Series Gran Coupe and i4 benefit from 48-volt mild hybrid technology. The base 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine has seen internal improvements to components like the ignition system and exhaust gas routing. It produces 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, the same as before. The tailpipe finishers have also grown from 3.5 inches wide to four inches wide. The 3.0-liter inline-six engine now gets an 11-horsepower boost from the 48V system, bringing its output to 386 horsepower. With all-wheel drive, the 2025 M440i can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 4.3 seconds, 0.1 seconds quicker than before.

BMW has also introduced new wheel options, including two-color, 20-inch BMW Individual Aero rims for the combustion models with the M Sport Package. Two new palette colors, Cape York Green Metallic and Red Metallic, are now available.

Inside the 4 Series Gran Coupe and i4, BMW has added its latest tech features and trim upgrades. The standard steering wheel on all but the top trims is now a two-spoke unit with a polygonal rim. With the M Sport Package, a three-spoke steering wheel with a flat bottom is included. The top trims also feature a red stripe at the 12 o’clock position on the M Sport wheels.

The BMW Operating System 8.5 brings several improvements to the infotainment system. The map screen is always displayed on the home screen, making it easier for drivers to input destinations. In the i4, the navigation system allows the driver to select a desired state of charge at a midpoint and destination in 5% increments. EV drivers can also choose preferred charging stations, and the routing system will prioritize these stations unless there are none available without a lengthy detour. As the driver gets closer to the station, the system will increase how often it checks for available chargers.

The updated infotainment system retains BMW’s familiar row of buttons on the left side of the screen. A new QuickSelect feature allows for horizontal swiping on some buttons to access related functions, simplifying the menu structure and providing more options from the home screen. Voice controls can now be used for a wider range of features, and the display screen visually responds to certain inputs, such as showing a gas pump when asking for directions to a service station. Climate control and heated steering wheel settings can also be adjusted using voice controls. Additionally, gesture controls can be used to change the direction of the air vents. Owners can also add a personal eSIM for connectivity, allowing data throughput using their own cellphone service.

In terms of materials, a smoother Sensatec upholstery comes as standard on the instrument panel and seats, along with a range of leather options. There are also new trim options, including M Fine Brushed Aluminum, Fineline Light open-pore wood, and Grey Blue Ash open-pore wood. The gear selector, BMW iDrive Controller, and Start/Stop button can be finished in a Galvanic style as well.

Production of the 2025 4 Series Gran Coupe and 2024 i4 will begin in July, with pricing to be announced closer to the launch date.

Overall, these updates to the 4 Series Gran Coupe and i4 demonstrate BMW’s commitment to enhancing the driving experience and incorporating the latest technology. The refreshed exterior styling and improved performance, combined with the upgraded interior features, make these vehicles even more appealing to customers. With the addition of the 48-volt mild hybrid system, BMW is also prioritizing sustainability and efficiency. As electric vehicle sales continue to surge, BMW’s introduction of the i4 showcases their determination to stay competitive in this rapidly evolving market.
