“2025 Lexus UX300h: Toyota’s Latest Hybrid Powertrain Shines in the Smallest Lexus”

Toyota and Lexus have established themselves as leaders in the hybrid vehicle market, with hybrid offerings available across their entire lineup. The latest addition to their hybrid lineup is the 2025 Lexus UX, which features Toyota’s fifth-generation hybrid system.

The new hybrid drivetrain in the UX offers several improvements over its predecessor. The main upgrade is the addition of more powerful electric motor-generators, resulting in a total power output of 196 horsepower when combined with the Atkinson-cycle 2.0-liter inline-four engine. This powertrain upgrade provides quicker acceleration and improved drivetrain refinement compared to the previous model.

Despite the increase in power, fuel economy estimates have actually improved. The front-wheel-drive model now has an EPA rating of 43 mpg combined, while the all-wheel-drive model achieves 42 mpg combined. These figures represent a 1 mpg and 3 mpg increase, respectively, over the previous model.

In terms of performance, the UX300h equipped with the F Sport Handling trim level offers handling-oriented upgrades such as adaptive dampers. However, the F Sport upgrades do not significantly enhance the vehicle’s performance compared to the standard model. In fact, in tests conducted by Car and Driver, the F Sport Handling model underperformed the non-F Sport model in terms of skidpad grip and braking distance.

While the UX may not be a top-performing vehicle in its segment, it still offers a pleasant driving experience for everyday commuting and errand running. The ride motions are well controlled, and the steering is nicely weighted. The interior of the UX has also received updates over the years, with new screens and infotainment software. The materials quality is good, and the overall interior feels appropriately premium.

However, there are some drawbacks to consider. The rear cargo area is small and has a high floor, and the rear seat space is less spacious compared to competitors like the BMW X1. Additionally, the UX’s pricing can be a point of contention. Starting under $40,000, the UX300h is more affordable than other subcompact luxury crossovers. However, when equipped with the F Sport Handling trim level and other optional features, the price can reach nearly $50,000, making it less competitive against more spacious and more powerful rivals.

Overall, the 2025 Lexus UX300h serves as a nice premium alternative to the Toyota Prius, offering a more prestigious badge and eye-catching styling. While it may not be the most competitive option in the subcompact luxury SUV segment, it works well as an upscale cousin to the Prius.
