2025 Mazda CX-70 vs CX-90: A Side-by-Side Comparison of Identical Twins

The 2025 Mazda CX-70 has been described as a two-door CX-90 by West Coast Editor James Riswick. While this may initially seem like an exaggeration, it is actually a literal truth. The two vehicles, aside from their seating arrangements, are identical in every way. There is no slight variation or minimal difference; they are exactly the same.

To prove this point, let’s take a look at some side-by-side comparisons. In a photograph, the long-term CX-90 is shown on the left, while the CX-70 is on the right. It’s worth noting that the CX-70 was unexpectedly delivered in white, but this only serves to further support our argument. When lined up together, the two vehicles match up perfectly.

While our CX-70 loaner came with some additional features, such as blacked-out mirror caps, the wheels on our CX-90 are preferred. The extra brightwork on the CX-70 doesn’t quite complement the white car as well, in our opinion. However, now that we’ve established their visual similarities, let’s explore what sets them apart.

Keeping convenience in mind, we’ll continue to refer to the CX-90 as the vehicle on the left. A notable distinction is the quilted leather found in the CX-70 loaner, which not only looks impressive but also feels incredibly luxurious. This level of quality isn’t something typically experienced with the leather in older Mazda models.

Moving to the interior, the CX-70 has a cargo shade behind the second row and storage cubbies instead of cupholders where the third-row bench would be in a CX-90. The first and second rows in both vehicles remain in the same positions.

When examining the cargo areas, it becomes apparent that the CX-90 has a significantly smaller space in comparison to the CX-70. Both cars feature a groove for the cargo shade molded into the side-plastic of the cargo area, as well as 12- and 120-volt power outlets on the right side.

Handling the third-row seats is another area where the two vehicles differ. The CX-90 has simple manual pull releases for the bench’s two halves, making accessing the third row easy. However, the CX-70 lacks this feature, so Mazda has provided a pair of buttons instead. In our long-term CX-90, these buttons are replaced by a 1,500-watt power outlet and a switch to control it.

One of the “cons” mentioned in our review of the 2024 CX-70 is that, “otherwise, the identical three-row CX-90 is more versatile.” These images provide clear evidence to support this statement. While some individuals may find the larger cargo area of the CX-70 more appealing, for the majority of buyers in search of a vehicle of this size, the CX-90 is the wiser choice.

In conclusion, the 2025 Mazda CX-70 truly lives up to its reputation as a two-door CX-90. These vehicles may have different names and seating arrangements, but that is their only distinction. From their overall appearance to their interior features, they are absolutely identical. While personal preferences may come into play, the CX-90 ultimately proves to be the more versatile and practical option for most buyers. So, if you’re in the market for a vehicle of this size, the CX-90 is worth considering.
