“2025 Rivian R1T and R1S: Updates to Rivian’s Flagship Models Bring Improved Range and Performance”

Rivian, a relatively unknown company, made waves in 2018 when it unveiled its battery-electric R1T pickup and R1S SUV at the LA Auto Show. These vehicles boasted impressive features such as a range of over 400 miles, a 0-60 time of 3 seconds, and a towing capacity of 11,000 pounds. At the time, only Tesla and Chevrolet offered electric vehicles with more than 200 miles of range.

Fast forward to 2021 and 2022, when reviewers had the opportunity to test drive the R1T and R1S. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with critics praising the vehicles’ off-roading capabilities and spacious interiors. One reviewer even said that it’s hard not to be excited about the Rivian R1T’s fundamentals after experiencing its performance on various terrains.

Now, Rivian is introducing its first round of updates to its flagship models with the 2025 Rivian R1T and R1S. These updates focus on improving the vehicles’ fundamentals and simplifying their design under the hood. Over 60% of the software and hardware components have been overhauled, resulting in space and weight savings. This not only makes repairs easier and less costly but also helps Rivian achieve its goal of a full-year profit.

One significant change is the rebuilt electrical architecture of the R1 models. The introduction of Nvidia Drive Orin chips has increased processing speed by tenfold, allowing for quicker response times. The number of Electronic Control Units (ECUs) has also been reduced from 17 to seven, streamlining the electrical system and eliminating unnecessary wiring.

The upgraded sensor suite, consisting of 11 cameras and five radar units, now makes better use of the improved processing power. The resolution of the cameras has been increased eightfold, resulting in clearer images and more precise detection. Efficiency gains have also been made, reducing the draw on the battery.

Speaking of the battery, the 2025 R1 models offer three different sizes, all powered by a new heat pump. The base Standard pack features a less expensive lithium-ion phosphate chemistry that still provides an estimated range of 270 miles. The Large and Max packs have been reengineered to offer more energy, thanks to refined components and a switch to die-casting for the pack enclosure.

In terms of performance, Rivian has introduced a Tri-Motor trim with a single front motor and dual rear motors. The standard Dual-Motor powertrain offers 553 horsepower and 610 pound-feet of torque, with a claimed 0-60 time of 4.5 seconds. The new Tri-Motor trim delivers a combined 850 horsepower and 1,103 pound-feet of torque, allowing for a blistering 0-60 time of 2.9 seconds in the R1T.

Outside, the refreshed R1 models feature cosmetic changes such as redesigned headlights and illuminated crossbars. Inside, the infotainment system has been made more responsive, and new interior lighting themes have been introduced. Rivian has also worked with Apple Music to integrate Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos, providing a premium audio experience.

One highly anticipated feature, the electrochromic roof, is now available as the Dynamic Glass Roof. This allows occupants to control the amount of sunlight entering the cabin, providing a more comfortable driving experience.

Despite these updates, there are still some areas for improvement. The cabin could be quieter, and Rivian has yet to include Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. However, the company plans to address these issues through software updates.
