“2025 Toyota Corolla FX: Honoring the Legacy, but Lacking in Performance Upgrades”

Toyota Introduces Special Edition 2025 Corolla FX to Honor Legacy Model

Toyota has recently unveiled a new special edition of the 2025 Corolla, the Corolla FX, which pays homage to the iconic 1987 Corolla FX16. However, while the new FX features a modest appearance package and stylish new wheels, it falls short in terms of performance upgrades.

The 1987 Corolla FX16 was praised for its exhilarating driving experience and was described as a “pocket rocket” in a road test. This was due to its use of the 1.6-liter twin-cam four-cylinder engine from the rear-drive Corolla GT-S and the mid-engined MR2, making it a truly sporty hatchback. Unfortunately, the new FX edition does not receive similar performance enhancements. Instead, it retains the SE grade’s 169-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder powertrain, which is more suited to the standard Corolla SE.

One of the key features of the Corolla FX is its upgraded infotainment system, which includes a larger 10.5-inch screen. While this will be standard on the FX, it will also be available on other models in the 2025 Corolla lineup. In terms of appearance, the FX boasts several changes inspired by Toyota’s Nightshade models, including a black roof, black accents for badging and mirror caps, and a prominent spoiler at the rear. Additionally, it comes with a set of 18-inch satin-black finished alloy wheels.

Although the new FX does come with standard lowering springs and retuned electric power steering for a “sporty feel,” enthusiasts may still be disappointed by the lack of significant performance upgrades. Especially when considering that Toyota offers the raving mad turbocharged three-cylinder engine from the GR Corolla, which could have been an exciting option for the new FX.

The Corolla FX edition is expected to arrive at dealerships later this fall. Pricing details for the full 2025 Corolla lineup will be announced in the coming months.

Overall, while the Corolla FX pays tribute to the beloved 1987 Corolla FX16, it may leave enthusiasts hoping for a more exciting driving experience feeling slightly underwhelmed. However, the new special edition still offers a range of attractive features and updates that enhance the overall appearance and technology of the Corolla lineup.
