Acura Introduces First Electric Pace Car at Pikes Peak Hill Climb

Acura is making history at this year’s 102nd Pikes Peak International Hill Climb by introducing their first all-electric car, the ZDX Type S, as the pace car. This marks a significant milestone for Acura and the hill climb event itself, as it has never had an electric pace car before. Acura has been supplying vehicles for the pace car duty for the past decade, including the TLX Type S and the NSX.

The ZDX Type S, powered by a 102-kWh battery pack and dual motors, boasts an impressive 499 horsepower and 544 lb-ft of torque. With adjustable air suspension, adaptive dampers, and front Brembo brakes with six-piston calipers, the ZDX is well-equipped to handle the challenging 156 turns throughout the nearly 5,000-foot climb up Pikes Peak.

Although the ZDX will not be participating in the actual race, Acura has enlisted two purpose-built Integras for the competition. Katherine Legge will be driving an HRC-developed Acura Integra Type S in the Time Attack 1 division, while Paul Hubers will be behind the wheel of a team HART Integra A-Spec in the Pikes Peak Open division. These Integras are specially designed for the demanding race and will showcase Acura’s performance capabilities.

While the ZDX is the first electric pace car at Pikes Peak, there have been several electric vehicles that have competed in the hill climb in the past. In 2018, the electric Volkswagen ID.R set a new overall Pikes Peak record with a time of 7 minutes and 57.148 seconds. Although electric SUVs may not match that level of performance anytime soon, Acura’s choice to use the ZDX as the pace car highlights the brand’s commitment to electric vehicles and aligns with the future direction of the iconic event.

The introduction of an all-electric pace car at Pikes Peak reflects the growing trend of electric vehicles in the automotive industry. With advancements in battery technology and performance capabilities, electric cars are becoming more competitive in various racing disciplines. Acura’s decision to showcase their electric offering at such a prestigious event demonstrates their confidence in the capabilities of their ZDX Type S and their commitment to sustainable mobility.

As electric vehicles continue to gain popularity, it is essential for automakers to demonstrate their performance capabilities in different settings. Motorsports events like Pikes Peak provide an excellent platform for showcasing the potential of electric vehicles and dispelling any doubts about their performance. Acura’s participation in the hill climb with the ZDX and the purpose-built Integras sends a strong message that electric vehicles can be both environmentally friendly and thrilling to drive.

In conclusion, Acura’s debut of the ZDX Type S as the first electric pace car at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb marks a significant milestone for the brand and the event itself. With its powerful electric drivetrain and advanced performance features, the ZDX showcases Acura’s commitment to electric mobility and their ability to compete in demanding racing environments. This move also reflects the broader trend of electric vehicles making strides in motorsports, demonstrating their potential for high-performance applications.
