Aether Fuels, an e-fuels startup, has recently secured $30.4 million in funding through a round led by undisclosed investors. This investment will significantly boost the company’s financial resources, as it had previously raised $8.5 million through convertible notes in late 2023. Aether Fuels aims to produce fuel for aviation and maritime shipping by utilizing carbon dioxide and other waste carbon streams.
The startup originated from Xora Innovation, an early-stage incubator operated by Temasek. While the company has not provided detailed information about its carbon-to-fuel conversion process, a patent application filed in January indicates that Aether Fuels may be exploring the use of natural gas. The proposed method involves gasifying solid waste, blending it with natural gas, and then transforming the mixture into a liquid fuel, with any waste carbon dioxide being captured in the process.
To further enhance its capabilities, Aether Fuels recently announced a partnership with GTI Energy, a natural gas nonprofit. This collaboration grants the startup access to GTI Energy’s gas-to-liquid program, which could potentially contribute to the development of more efficient and sustainable fuel production methods.
The aviation and maritime industries have been actively seeking ways to decarbonize their operations, leading to growing interest in bio-derived sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and e-fuels. However, SAF production remains relatively limited, accounting for less than 0.1% of total consumption. In comparison, e-fuels are still in their early stages of development.
