A purported data broker emerged on a cybercrime forum, claiming to have personal information of approximately 375 million Airtel users for sale. This alleged information included phone numbers, email addresses, Aadhaar identification numbers, and residential addresses.

However, TechCrunch reviewed the data sample shared by the broker and found discrepancies in its entries. Some security experts have also questioned the legitimacy of the alleged incident. Rahul Sasi, the founder and CEO of cybersecurity startup CloudSEK, analyzed the data sample and stated that it does not appear to be an Airtel database. Instead, it seems to be an aggregated database of multiple sources, falsely labeled as an Airtel database.

Interestingly, shortly after the incident was reported online, the forum post was removed, and the broker’s account was permanently blocked for suspected scamming. This raises further doubts about the credibility of the alleged data breach.

Airtel’s swift response and firm denial of any breach provide reassurance to its vast subscriber base.
