Amazon Discontinues Astro for Business Security Robot, Focusing on Home Version

Amazon has made the decision to discontinue its Astro for Business device, a security robot designed for small- and medium-sized businesses. This announcement comes just seven months after the device was launched. In an email sent to customers and employees, Amazon stated that they want to shift their focus to the home version of Astro.

The home version of Astro, which was introduced in 2021, offers a range of features including home security, pet detection, message delivery, and a cargo bin that can carry up to 4.4 pounds. Amazon spokesperson emphasized their commitment to bringing world-class consumer robotics solutions into the home. They expressed excitement about the ongoing research and development to make Astro the best in-home robot.

As a result of this decision, Astro for Business robots will cease to function starting on September 25. Amazon has advised customers to recycle the security robots through their recycling program, with the company covering the shipping cost. While Amazon did not disclose the number of business customers affected by this discontinuation, it is evident that there were not enough customers for them to justify investing in the devices.

The Astro for Business robots were priced at $2,350 and were accompanied by three subscription plans. The “Astro Secure” subscription, costing $60 per month, offered features like programming routes. Two optional subscriptions were also available, allowing users to pay $20 per month for features like Ring alarms and motion detectors, and an additional $99 per month for human agent support and monitoring.

In light of this decision, Amazon has made several accommodations for affected customers. Companies will no longer be charged the “Astro Secure” subscription fee. Furthermore, Amazon has announced a $300 credit for affected customers, which they can use to find a suitable replacement solution for their workplace. Additionally, customers will be refunded for any unused, pre-paid Astro Secure fees.

This discontinuation of Astro for Business highlights Amazon’s commitment to focusing on their in-home robotics solutions. It also underscores the importance of customer demand in driving the success of these types of products. While Astro for Business may not have gained enough traction in the market, Amazon remains dedicated to advancing consumer robotics technology and is excited to unveil more innovations in the future.
