Apple Adds Support for Rich Communication Services (RCS) to Messages App in iOS 18

Apple has made a significant update to its Messages app by adding support for Rich Communication Services (RCS). This messaging protocol allows users to send and receive files, high-quality images, see typing indicators, get read receipts, and start group chats, among other features. Previously, iPhone users were limited to sending SMS or MMS messages to non-Apple device users. With the addition of RCS support, iPhone users can now text and share files with anyone using a device that supports RCS, which includes most Android phones.

However, there is one limitation to this update. Messages from Android devices will still appear as green bubbles in iMessage. Despite this minor setback, the inclusion of RCS support is a significant step forward for Apple in bridging the gap between iPhone and Android users.

Currently, support for RCS is limited to U.S. carriers such as T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon. Users who have installed the iOS 18 developer beta can see the toggle for RCS support. However, the feature will only work if their mobile carrier supports RCS and has updated their network bundle for iOS 18. It is uncertain when RCS support will be available in other regions.

The inclusion of RCS support in iOS 18 was briefly mentioned during Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) keynote. Apple stated in its press release that the Messages app now supports RCS for richer media and more reliable group messaging when messaging contacts who do not have an Apple device. This update has been highly anticipated by both iPhone and Android users, as it allows for easier communication and sharing regardless of the device being used.

Apple’s decision to add RCS support may have been influenced by Google’s push to bridge the divide between blue and green bubbles. For years, both iPhone and Android users have been requesting Apple to support RCS, recognizing its benefits in enhancing messaging capabilities.

In addition to RCS support, the iOS 18 developer beta also introduced the ability to mirror iPhones on Mac displays. This feature further enhances the integration between Apple devices, providing users with a seamless experience across different platforms.
