Apple in Talks with Meta to Incorporate Generative AI, Wall Street Journal Reports

Apple Pursues Partnerships with Meta and Other AI Companies to Boost its Artificial Intelligence Capabilities

In an effort to catch up with competitors in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), Apple is reportedly in talks with major rival Meta to incorporate Meta’s generative AI into its products. This move comes after Apple recently signed an agreement with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, to enhance its Apple Intelligence suite with new AI capabilities.

Apple has faced pressure from critics who have questioned its AI strategy, especially after Microsoft and Google quickly released their own AI products. While Apple has developed some AI technology in-house, it has relied on partnerships with companies like OpenAI to supplement its offerings.

According to sources cited by the Wall Street Journal, Meta has discussed the possibility of integrating its generative AI model into Apple Intelligence. Additionally, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, Craig Federighi, has expressed interest in incorporating features from Google’s generative AI system, Gemini, into Apple products.

Apple is also exploring collaborations with other AI companies, including those based in China where Microsoft’s OpenAI chatbot ChatGPT is prohibited. Anthropic, an AI firm, is reportedly in talks with Apple to bring its generative AI to Apple Intelligence. Perplexity, an AI search firm, is also said to be discussing bringing its generative AI technology to Apple Intelligence.

One of the challenges Apple faces is incorporating AI technology that consumes large amounts of data, like ChatGPT-style AI, without compromising user privacy and security. However, Apple aims to leverage AI to improve user experiences. For example, Apple Intelligence will allow users to create custom emojis based on descriptions in everyday language and provide concise summaries of emails.

Apple also plans to enhance its speech assistant, Siri, with AI capabilities. Siri, which was introduced over 12 years ago, has fallen behind newer virtual assistants like GPT-4o. To give Siri a boost, Apple will introduce a visual indicator in the form of a pulsing light on the edge of the home screen.

The demand for generative AI capabilities in smartphones is expected to rise significantly. Canalys predicts that 16 percent of smartphones delivered this year will have generative AI capabilities, and this number is projected to increase to 54 percent by 2028.

While the discussions between Apple and AI companies are ongoing, there is no guarantee that any partnerships will be finalized. However, collaborating with Apple would provide AI companies with broader distribution for their products.

The financial details of these potential collaborations are unknown, but there are indications that AI businesses may offer premium memberships to their services through Apple Intelligence.

Overall, Apple’s pursuit of partnerships with Meta and other AI companies demonstrates its commitment to enhancing its AI capabilities and catching up with rivals in the field. By incorporating generative AI into its products, Apple aims to provide users with more advanced and personalized experiences while ensuring privacy and security.
