Atari and Plaion have recently announced their partnership to release a new console called the Atari 7800+ console. This updated version is a modernized recreation of the 1986 7800 console and comes with HDMI connectivity. It also includes a Wireless CX78+ Gamepad and is compatible with Atari 2600 and 7800 cartridges. Pre-orders for the console are now available, with a planned launch date in winter 2024.
The partnership between Atari and Plaion doesn’t stop there. They have also introduced the CX40+ Wireless Joystick, which is a recreation of the 7800’s original controller. Additionally, they announced the CX78+ controller, a recreation of the CX40 joystick. Both of these controllers can connect to the 7800+ and 2600+ wirelessly and are even compatible with original 7800 and 2600 hardware through an included adapter. Furthermore, they are PC-compatible, providing even more convenience for gamers.
In addition to the controllers, each console will come with a specially designed cartridge featuring Bentley Bear’s Crystal Quest, a homebrew sequel to the classic game Crystal Castles. Alongside the new console, ten new game cartridges will also be launched. These cartridges will include classic Atari titles like Asteroids Deluxe, Berzerk, and Frenzy, all programmed by Atari homebrew developer Robert DeCrescenzo. Atari has also announced several game collection cartridges for the 2600+, including the Epyx Game Collection and the RealSports Collection.
Wade Rosen, CEO of Atari, expressed his excitement about expanding the Atari+ platform with new games, wireless controllers, and the 7800+ console. He sees it as a perfect follow-up to the successful launch of the Atari 2600+ last year.
