“Audi Reveals Next-Generation A5 as BMW 3 Series Alternative with New EV-Focused Naming System”

Audi has surprised car enthusiasts with the unveiling of the new A5, which comes with a change in the brand’s naming system. As part of Audi’s shift towards electric vehicles (EVs), the next-generation A5 will replace the A4 as the brand’s rival to the BMW 3 Series. The A5 will be available in both sedan and wagon versions.

Under the new naming system, odd-numbered nameplates will represent cars powered by internal-combustion engines, while even-numbered nameplates will be assigned to electric models. This move leaves uncertainty regarding the fate of the previous-generation A5 coupe and convertible models, which were discontinued in the American market after the 2024 model year. Currently, Audi has only announced the sedan and wagon variants of the new A5, both of which are based on the new Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) architecture that will likely be used for future models.

In terms of design, the new A5 is longer and wider than its predecessor and features a sleek fastback-like silhouette with a sloping roofline that merges into a large hatch. The front end showcases a wider and flatter grille along with slim LED headlights, while the rear features an OLED light bar capable of displaying various animations.

Inside, the A5 comes equipped with additional standard and optional technology features and an abundance of screens. The infotainment system is primarily operated through a large 14.5-inch touchscreen display, accompanied by an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster. Furthermore, a third 10.9-inch screen is available for the front passenger.

Specific details regarding the American-market A5 are yet to be released, but what remains clear is that the Avant wagon variant will not be sold in the United States. In Europe, buyers will have two initial engine options for the A5. The entry-level engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged TFSI four-cylinder with 148 horsepower, followed by a more powerful 201-horsepower version. Alternatively, customers can choose a 2.0-liter turbodiesel TDI four-cylinder engine generating 201 horsepower and an impressive 295 pound-feet of torque, thanks in part to a mild-hybrid system. All engines are paired with a dual-clutch automatic transmission, and while no mention of a manual transmission was made, front-wheel-drive is standard, with Quattro all-wheel-drive available on specific models.

The S5 nameplate also makes a return, now equipped with a 3.0-liter turbocharged TFSI V6 engine that produces 362 horsepower. This high-performance variant also features mild-hybrid technology, a dual-clutch automatic transmission, and a Quattro sport differential with torque vectoring.

Audi claims that the new A5 benefits from significant chassis updates over the outgoing A4, including an optional suspension system with adaptive dampers that offer a wider range between comfort and sport settings. Additionally, Audi has made the steering “considerably more precise.”

The new Audi A5 is set to be available for sale in Europe starting in November 2024, with prices in Germany starting at €45,200 (approximately $49,300). More information about the American-market model will be provided later. As for the future of the A4 nameplate, it is uncertain whether it will reappear on a new electric model or be retired altogether.
