Avatr Aims for UK EV Launch with New Right-Hand Drive SUV by 2025

Avatr, a bold newcomer in the electric vehicle (EV) sector, is making significant strides with plans to launch in the UK by the end of 2025. This ambitious venture is a collaboration between three heavyweight players: battery manufacturer CATL, automotive producer Changan, and technology titan Huawei. Such backing not only emphasizes the brand’s commitment to quality and innovation but also positions it favorably within an increasingly competitive market.

The recent unveiling of Avatr’s first right-hand drive model, the 11 SUV, in Thailand underscores the company’s strategy to establish a foothold in Southeast Asia before making broader international inroads. This SUV, which rivals the BMW X5 in size, marks a critical step in Avatr’s globalization efforts. Brand president Chen Zhuo has articulated a vision of Thailand serving as a “bridgehead” for expansion, with plans to penetrate other Southeast Asian markets and the global right-hand-drive vehicle space.

The specifications of the Avatr 11 are impressive, showcasing a blend of cutting-edge technology and performance. It features a 90.4kWh battery offering a range of 245 miles, priced at approximately £47,729, and a more robust 116.8kWh option that delivers an impressive 420-mile range for around £52,307. These figures are competitive, especially given the growing consumer demand for longer-range EVs. The SUV is built on Changan’s EP1 electric platform, supported by a 750V electrical architecture, and is powered by dual electric motors developed by Huawei, producing a substantial 570bhp and 479lb ft of torque. Initially, the right-hand drive variants of the 11 SUV will be manufactured in Chongqing, China, but production will shift to Thailand in the near future as part of a broader strategy to streamline operations. Changan’s increasing investment in research and development in the UK, highlighted by the establishment of an engineering center in Birmingham, reflects a commitment to addressing the unique needs of the UK market.
