Bedeo Unveils Electric Land Rover Defender 110 with In-Wheel Motors

Bedeo, a British engineering firm, has recently unveiled an electric conversion of the Land Rover Defender 110. This unique electric Defender maintains the rugged charm of the original 4×4 while embracing the advantages of electric power. It is the first in a series of Reborn Electric Icons that Bedeo plans to offer.

What sets this electric Defender apart is its innovative four in-wheel motors, which were designed and engineered by Bedeo’s subsidiary firm, Protean Electric. This groundbreaking technology took eight years to develop and has been extensively tested, covering over 37 million miles across Europe.

Powering the electric Defender is a 75kWh battery, which provides a claimed range of 153 miles. The battery can be fully charged in just five hours using a 22kW charger, and there is an optional 50kW fast charger available that can top up the battery in just 90 minutes.

The four in-wheel motors produce a combined output of 320bhp and 1916lb ft of torque, resulting in a 0-62mph time of 10 seconds and a top speed of 80mph. This innovative motor setup eliminates the need for driveshafts and creates more space in the center of the car between the driven wheels. Additionally, Bedeo has minimized cabling, with only two cables supplying power and one smaller cable used by the ECU.

Bedeo’s CEO, Osman Boyer, expressed his commitment to maintaining the original car’s kerb weight, charm, and driving dynamics while delivering the benefits of electrification. He sees the Reborn Electric Icons program as a natural evolution for Bedeo as pioneers in sustainable mobility. The successful conversion of the iconic Defender demonstrates the versatility of their proprietary technologies and opens up new possibilities for the future.

While Bedeo has not disclosed pricing details for their electric Defender, it is expected to be around £100,000. This cost includes the £25,000 needed for the in-wheel motors and the price of an existing Defender with bespoke trimmings. The price tag reflects the advanced technology and unique features of this electric conversion.
