The new Bentley Continental GT Speed is set to make its debut next week, and it’s bringing some exciting changes. The most significant update is the introduction of a plug-in hybrid powertrain, replacing the retired W12 motor. This PHEV version of the Continental will wear the prestigious Speed moniker, previously reserved for the top-rung W12 model.

Despite the drop in cylinders, the new PHEV powertrain surpasses its predecessor in terms of performance. With a generous power output and an impressive torque of 738lb ft, the new Speed can shave off 0.4 seconds from its 0-62mph sprint time. Additionally, Bentley has confirmed that the new Speed will be able to travel up to 50 miles with the engine off, thanks to a 25.9kWh battery located under the boot floor.

The technical specifications of the new Bentley Continental GT Speed will be revealed at the upcoming event, along with its refreshed design, which draws inspiration from the limited-run Bacalar and Batur coachbuilt creations. Autocar has already had the opportunity to drive a prototype of the 2024 Bentley Continental Speed PHEV, providing some first impressions of the car.

The heart of this new-generation Continental is a V8 plug-in hybrid powertrain, making it the most powerful Bentley yet. The combination of a 4.0-liter V8 engine and an electric motor results in a total power output of 771bhp and 738lb ft of torque. The car can also operate on full electric power alone, delivering 188bhp and offering a range of over 50 miles. All four wheels are driven through an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

This late prototype still wears some elements from the existing Continental, leading to questions about whether it’s just a mild tweak or an entirely new-generation car. Bentley clarifies that the new powertrain, suspension, and additional connectivity and cybersecurity regulations make it a new-generation model that has undergone extensive testing and homologation.

The engine alone produces an impressive 591bhp, with peak torque coming in at 2000-4500rpm. The electric motor is utilized to boost torque and reduce lag at low revs, as well as to smooth gearchanges. The adoption of a 25.9kWh battery mounted at the back has improved the weight distribution, bringing it closer to a 50:50 balance.

The Continental GT Speed also features advanced hardware to manage its heft, including 48V active anti-roll bars, two-chamber air springs, and a new dual-valve damper system. These enhancements aim to provide a comfortable ride in the default driving mode while significantly improving control and responsiveness in sporty driving modes.

During Autocar’s limited drive of the prototype, two standout features were immediately noticeable. The steering felt lighter and more direct, making the car feel more alive and responsive. The redistributed weight also improved the turn-in and balance of the car, allowing for more neutral handling on corners and better adjustability on corner exit. The car’s speed is also remarkable, with Bentley claiming a 0-62mph time of 3.2 seconds.

Inside the Continental GT Speed, a big positive gearstick and a rotating pyramid console element remain, emphasizing the car’s blend of involvement and luxury. The car offers a range of driving modes, allowing the driver to choose between a more engaging or relaxed driving experience.
