“Bentley Introduces V8 Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain for New Continental GT”

Bentley is set to introduce a new-generation Continental GT with a V8 plug-in hybrid powertrain, replacing the previous W12 engine. This new version, called the Speed, is the most powerful Bentley yet and will compete with the Aston Martin DB12 and Ferrari Roma. The combination of a 4.0-litre V8 engine and an electric motor produces a total of 771bhp and 738lb ft of torque. The car can also be driven on full electric power alone for over 50 miles. The powertrain distributes power to all four wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

According to Bentley, this new-generation model has undergone extensive testing and homologation due to the introduction of the new powertrain, suspension upgrades, and additional connectivity and cybersecurity regulations. The engine alone produces 591bhp at 6000rpm, with peak torque available between 2000-4500rpm. The electric motor is primarily used to boost torque and reduce lag at low revs. It also helps smooth gearchanges by sitting between the engine and the gearbox.

The weight distribution of the Continental GT has been improved with the adoption of a 25.9kWh battery mounted at the back, bringing it closer to a 50:50 balance. However, the overall weight of the car is still to be confirmed. The battery has led to a reduction in fuel tank capacity to 80 litres but has also increased the boot floor height and capacity.

To manage the car’s weight, Bentley has equipped it with 48V active anti-roll bars, two-chamber air springs, and a new dual-valve damper system. These upgrades have improved the car’s ride response and body control, providing a more comfortable and controlled driving experience.

During a limited test drive on a damp circuit, it was noted that the steering felt lighter and more direct, making the car feel more responsive. The weight redistribution also improved the car’s turn-in and balance, allowing for more neutral handling and adjustability on corner exit. The car’s rear end is now more responsive, allowing for controlled rotation during cornering.

In terms of performance, Bentley claims a 0-62mph time of 3.2 seconds for the Continental GT Speed. While it was difficult to fully experience the car’s acceleration on a damp circuit, the power delivery was consistent, and the V8 engine produced a muscular sound. In sportier drive modes, gearshifts were more pronounced, while comfort mode provided smoother shifts.

Inside the car, the familiar gearstick and rotating pyramid console element remain. Bentley aims to maintain the Continental GT’s balance between driver involvement and comfort, allowing drivers to choose between an engaging driving experience or a more relaxed and luxurious ride.

Overall, the new-generation Bentley Continental GT Speed with its V8 plug-in hybrid powertrain offers improved performance, handling, and comfort compared to its predecessor. The extensive testing and upgrades make it the most powerful and regulated Continental GT to date. With its combination of power, efficiency, and luxury, it is poised to compete with other high-performance grand tourers in its segment.
