Berkeley SkyDeck Announces Unveiling of 17th Accelerator Class on April 10

Berkeley SkyDeck, a global hub for entrepreneurship and a leading accelerator, has announced the unveiling of its 17th accelerator class. The Demo Day for Batch 17 is set to take place on April 10, 2024, at Zellerbach Hall in Berkeley, California. This event will showcase the innovative startups that have been nurtured and supported by Berkeley SkyDeck.

Despite economic headwinds and market fluctuations, Berkeley SkyDeck startups have consistently raised capital, totaling over $200 million in the last 12 months. This achievement reflects the companies’ sound business models and strong leadership teams, positioning them as attractive investment opportunities.

The Batch 17 startups are particularly notable for their focus on artificial intelligence (AI). More than half of the 20 presenting companies have AI at the core of their solutions, with applications spanning education, healthcare, enterprise software, data, and life sciences. The presence of AI in this year’s selection is a testament to both the success of previous AI-focused companies that have emerged from SkyDeck and the constant evaluation of markets to identify key investment opportunities.

Among the successful AI alumni of SkyDeck is MindsDB, a custom AI creation platform that has raised a total of $54.4 million from top investors including NVentures. Another notable alumnus is Hayden AI, which focuses on AI mobile perception and has raised over $100 million, with investors such as Mitsubishi Electric Innovation Fund and Bridgestone Corporation. Deepscribe, a platform that leverages ambient AI to transform conversations between doctors and patients into customizable clinical notes, has secured $59 million in funding from prominent venture capital firms.

In addition to its investment in AI companies, SkyDeck also plans to host an AI Hackathon this summer to identify and nurture rising talent in the space. This initiative further demonstrates SkyDeck’s commitment to staying at the forefront of innovation and finding technologies that solve real pain points and provide value to society.

Caroline Winnett, the executive director at Berkeley SkyDeck, expressed excitement about the Batch 17 startups, stating that they exemplify a forward-first approach that can set the next trends in AI, rather than simply iterating on existing ones. She also highlighted SkyDeck’s plans to host the largest in-person AI hackathon again in June, showcasing their dedication to fostering innovation and supporting the growth of AI-focused startups.

Berkeley SkyDeck’s Demo Day is an exclusive event that invites accredited investors to witness the presentations by the Batch 17 startups. The event will feature discussions on how generative AI is transforming the security workforce and will take place in partnership with Microsoft. With access to SkyDeck’s extensive network of advisors, industry partners, and UC Berkeley alumni, participating startups have a strong support system to help them navigate the challenges of scaling their businesses.

The success of Berkeley SkyDeck and its startups can be attributed to its commitment to innovation, investment in AI-focused companies, and its ability to identify promising opportunities in various industries. As the AI industry continues to grow and evolve, the achievements of SkyDeck’s alumni showcase the potential for AI to revolutionize our world and create significant value in the market. Investors are eagerly watching the Demo Day for Batch 17 as they search for companies capable of real success in the AI space.
