Beware of WhatsApp Scam: How Fraudsters are Using Audio Calls to Exploit Group Chats

WhatsApp Group Scam Puts Financial Security at Risk

In recent months, a new scam has emerged on WhatsApp that is putting the financial security of unsuspecting individuals at risk. This scam involves a fraudulent audio call and has been the cause of hundreds of complaints to Action Fraud, the national reporting mechanism for fraud and cybercrime in the United Kingdom.

The scam begins when a con artist joins a WhatsApp group chat and assumes a fake display name and profile picture to deceive others. By doing so, they aim to gain the trust and confidence of group members. During the conversation, the scammer will inform the victim that they need to provide a one-time passcode (OTP) to be “registered” for the session. This request may seem harmless at first, but it is a crucial step in their plan.

What victims may not realize is that the OTP is actually an access code that allows the fraudster to take control of their WhatsApp account on another device. Once they have access, the scammer activates two-step verification, effectively locking the victim out of their own account.

With control over the victim’s account, the con artist can now exploit their contacts. They send messages to friends and family, posing as the victim and requesting money under false pretenses. This tactic preys on the goodwill and trust of those close to the victim, potentially leading to significant financial loss.

To protect yourself from falling victim to this scam, it is essential to be wary of any requests for OTPs or personal information during WhatsApp conversations. Action Fraud advises individuals to enable two-step verification on their WhatsApp accounts to add an extra layer of security.

It is important to stay vigilant and verify any unusual requests or messages received through WhatsApp. If you suspect you have been targeted by this scam or any other fraudulent activity, report it to Action Fraud immediately.

In an era where digital scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated, it is crucial to prioritize cybersecurity and raise awareness about these threats. By staying informed and taking necessary precautions, we can protect ourselves and our loved ones from falling victim to these malicious schemes.
