Bluesky Introduces Direct Messaging (DMs) with Plans for More Features

Bluesky, the microblogging platform, has recently introduced direct messaging (DMs) to its list of features, giving users another reason to consider switching from its competitor, Twitter/X. Although the current DMs system is basic, only allowing users to send text and emojis without the ability to share images or videos, Bluesky has assured users that it is actively working on adding these features in future updates.

One of the key aspects Bluesky plans to focus on is privacy and safety. The platform intends to incorporate end-to-end encryption to protect users’ sensitive conversations. However, it is worth noting that Bluesky reserves the right to access DMs in specific cases to investigate patterns of abuse such as spam or coordinated harassment. Although this access is limited and closely monitored internally, individuals concerned about privacy may prefer to use a secure messaging app like Signal for their confidential discussions.

To provide users with control over their conversations, Bluesky allows them to report DMs directly to its moderators. By doing so, users can bring attention to any inappropriate messages, and moderators can review the reported messages and the surrounding context for a comprehensive understanding of the situation.

It’s important to note that Bluesky has implemented measures to prevent an influx of unwanted messages. By default, only people you follow can send you DMs. However, users have the flexibility to adjust this setting and allow everyone to message them or restrict messaging from anyone. Additionally, accounts that have been blocked cannot send DMs, although those that have been muted can still reach out directly.

Apart from introducing DMs, Bluesky has other plans for enhancing its platform. In a previous blog post, the company mentioned its intention to add video uploads and improve its moderation tools. These upcoming features demonstrate Bluesky’s commitment to providing a comprehensive and engaging user experience.

Bluesky’s introduction of direct messaging opens up new avenues for communication on the platform. While the current capabilities are limited, the promise of future updates and additional features indicates that Bluesky is actively working to improve user satisfaction. Whether it’s through the integration of multimedia sharing or bolstering privacy measures, Bluesky is striving to create a platform that caters to the diverse needs of its users.
